I have a Samsung tv and a Panasonic dvd recorder that can both connect to the internet. My router is right round the other side of the house and would need a very long cat5 patch cable to connect. The question is, can I connect both devices to one cable with a splitter or will I have to run 2 cables?

A switch and one cable will do
e.g. £13 for switch might even find them cheaper for a basic 10/100 switch these days

Just what I have been looking for to hook up my TV, Freesat PVR, Blu-ray player and possibly a HTPC to my router as I already have run one long ethernet lead from the other room to where my AV kit is. Thanks.
Was think of ressurecting my old Netgear DG814 router to do the job but this looks a lot simpler and presumably less power hungry.

Depends on budget, and of course how long the cables need to be...
A small switch at the TV end, plus one cable back to the router will do it.
Alternatively, http://www.solwise.co.uk/net-powerline-av-index.htm will do the trick without running CAT5 round the house.

Yeah can do it with a router, but power and size of old routers, and the faff factor.
When switches were £40+ it was worth the hassle to reuse stuff, but at the price they are now, there is little sense

Actually the only point of hooking up my TV and Blu-ray player is to make it easy to do firmware update as their online widgetry is no great shakes whereas I get BBC iPlayer through the Freesat PVR. But may be interesting to have a look at the online content for various Blu-ray discs.

Arrived today but so much TV to catch up on will be tomorrow before I install it. Now, I am sure I had some more short ethernet cables laying around somewhere ...

Finally got round to hooking it up and turning it on. TV, Freesat PVR and Blu-ray all nicely playing with the network. Just need to commit to getting myself an HTPC now ...
