Dual radio, dual band, Gigabit N cable router

[link to this post]

A (long) while since I visited this site.

I am looking for recommendations for a new wireless router to go with my Virgin cable service.
Brief requirements:

No ADSL modem, just a WAN port
Supports wireless N
Two radios so it can support both frequencies simultaneously
Gigabit Ethernet (preferably both WAN and LAN)
at least 1 wired LAN port, 4+ preferred

The last review I can find on the main site is from 1st November 2010.

A USB port for a SAMBA HDD would be nice but not essential
Ditto for printer support.

Thanks

Bear in mind that 5ghz doesn't have good wifi range.

Through just 2 walls my speeds are worse on 5ghz than 2.4ghz
I actually switched back to my 2.4ghz router and didn't keep my dual band router as I saw no big benefit

The Buffalo seems to fit the requirements.
Also even newer network standards smile

Any other contenders?

Perhaps the Linksys EA4500?

Not sure if it has 'WAN' as opposed to 'Internet'.

Perfect timing

Also playing with an Asus RT-N66U which is a dedicated Ethernet router, which had a pretty awesome WAN to LAN throughput when I measured it, i.e. above 500 Mbps

In this case 'WAN' and 'internet' are essentially the same thing.

It is tempting to get a bit of kit with far more capabilities than I am currently using (or possibly need).
However £200 may be a little over budget.
Does it screen incoming calls?
That might be an advantage with all the Mumbai scammers/cold callers we are getting.

The Buffalo is still leading the pack on price and latest networking standards.

Can't say I tried to set it up to block individual calls.

Certainly there was options to turn off phones according to a weekly calendar, handy to avoid night time pestering.

It does support it, but it seems to be one feature which depends on setup and/or firmware. Perhaps it's a connection (technology used) type issue. See this thread:

http://www.fritzforum.com/showthread.php?1051-Fritz!...

Also scroll halfway down page 3 for screenshot:

Some struggle with it, it seems.

I personally did a lot of searching on this matter (being a VM 100Meg customer on a SH) after about 6 hours research i came to the conclusion that this GOOGLESHOP for EnGenius ESR9850 was the best Value for performance out of 95% of the routers available, the only downside is its not the prettiest Router in the yearbook, but bang per buck it out performs £200+ routers. I got this router for the High WAN to LAN which the VM equiptment fails at doing and it serves 4 Mobiles, 2 Laptops and My PC on Ethernet. Never had a single issue with it and it performs brilliantly in any task so far, worth a look in.

Stay away from Buffalo routers they're nothing special. Go for a dual band Cisco (market leader), Asus or Netgear router and you won't have problems. I have the Cisco/Linksys EA4500 and its rock solid...excellent speeds on both 2.4 and 5 ghz and range is amazing. The Asus RT-N66U is also highly rated as is the Netgear N900.

The Buffalo does offer the more recent 802.11ac, allegedly faster than 802.11n

However this is an early implementation.

Any other contenders for ac?

Looks like will have to get one of them to play with.

Had a fun day with the RT-N66U

If you must go for a 802.11ac router then the Netgear R6300 is your best bet, however its around £200 and you're likely to be a beta tester. Just buy a top class N router for now such as the Asus RT66, netgear n900 or Linksys EA4500 and then wait for 6-12 months...in that time 802.11ac network adaptors will be released (there's none at present), many bugs will be ironed out, 802.11 ac router prices will fall and you'll have far more ac routers to choose from. Just be patient smile

Key is to pick a router than can support the throughput you expect from your broadband connection over next two years, wireless access points can add the ac network and by the time their prices are reasonable I am sure the next standard will be emerging.

Just to update this thread.

As was mentioned earlier, the Asus RT-N66U looks to be an awesome bit of kit, however Asus have now released the RT-AC66U, which basically takes all of the N66U and updates the wireless tech to the ac "standard".

Personally I think the N class router is the option for me, based on cost.
