Master Socket issue

I have just changed from AOL UK to talktalk and a curiosity has arisen!

The service works when plugged into the phone socket in my study but when I move it to the master socket I cannot get any internet connection at all and the internet light on the modem remains unlit.

Does anyone have any idea why the broadband connection works in an extension socket but not in the master socket? It seems very strange to me.

Perhaps the master faceplate plug hole is dusty / broken. I assume you mean the front outer plug socket on the master, as opposed to the removing of the faceplate and plugging in to the internal plug hole?

Bent pins? On maybe a damaged master with the extension hardwired to the incoming terminals. Several more possibilities ...

Can you get some images of inside te master and extension sockets so we can see what wires are where.

Master socket may not be the first socket in the line

Does a telephone work in it?

It is not a regular Master socket. It is more the first socket in the line (as very kindly traced by Mr Saffron about 18 months ago).

I can't think that there are any bent pins as it all worked beautifully when we were testing the line and the wiring and I haven't used it since. A telephone works in the socket. The house is about 6 years old and therefore the wiring is that age too.

Sorry for the delay in replying but I forgot I had a filter on!!

Yes mate, 4 sockets upstairs and one downstairs. The line comes in at the front door into the garage and then straight up. Loops upstairs and comes down into the livingroom.

The line stats are interesting!! I spent yesterday morning trying four of the five sockets with four different routers. The only one I could get to connect was the extension in my study.

Today I tried the first socket in the line and to my amazement it connected!! But the line stats tell a story:

So in the "Master" socket I get 361kb download speed and in the extension I get 5mb.

I am thoroughly confused!!

On another note BBC iplayer is loading quicker on tv when connected via wifi than it does connected with homeplugs.

First off - DISCONNECT every extension so that you have just the master socket. This should be done by removing the top half of the face plate and then connecting to the test socket behind. If you do not have a split faceplate you will need to disconnect them however they are connected.

What stats do you get then?

And whilst it is apart can you get some pictures of the master and wires connected to it.
