I need a router that just won't quit!

Hi there,
I really need people's advice: I live 2-3 miles from my country exchange, and my signal-to-noise ratio drops like a stone come nightfall. My router then loses sync and doesn't do a good job of trying to reconnect to the exchange/ISP.

What modem/router do people recommend that's best known for:

1. holding on to a weak signal and not letting go if at at all possible

2. if it does lose sync, will keep on trying until it gets it back again

What are people's best recommendations?

Which router do you have now, and what are the router stats? e.g. if you are seeing a 12dB drop in noise margin at night, then no router will probably help.

might be worth a look as that gives you some degree of configuration over parameters that should make the router more stable

If you can find an unused 2wire 2700HGV-C on ebay they can hold a weak signal quite well and after a loss of sync will reconnect as soon as it is able.

Can you run RouterStats Lite and give an approximation of the SNR swing from day to night.

I second the BT Business Hub 2Wire 2700HGV wireless router recommendation for hanging onto a long telephone line back to the exchange.

generally drops by around 6-10dB's. That's a mighty fine router you kindly
linked to, thank you, cost is way too rich for my blood but I appreciate the thought

Thanks very much for that, I'm now watching a few of those routers
on eBay that the sellers swear are not locked to BT, so looking good!

I can vouch for the 2Wire. Lovely bit of kit. Used to be standard issue for BT Business connections, so you should be able to pick one up on eBay. The PSUs are not so good, imho, but they are easily replaced.

They have BT firmware but are not locked to BT. There are alternative firmwares available too.

If you want to PM the ones you are looking at I can give them a quick check. Hopefully you will get a version 6.

MickS mentions the PSUs but I have not had a problem with any of them and I am currently running four here - a 2701 as a router and three 2700s as WAPs.
