Router with ethernet WAN port

Hi,

I'd like to connect a router to an ethernet network in the building so I can run my own network, independently of the building network but still using the internet. I presume this requires a router with an ethernet WAN port to connect to the ethernet socket in the wall. Will a standard cable router do this?

Thanks. Just wanted to check it would work before I buy one as cable routers always say that they are for connecting to cable modems.
