Netgear switch and my new router

My current set-up is an Edimax AR-7284Wna modem router connected to a Netgear FS605 v3 five port switch. All works OK with three PCs connected to the switch.

I have just bought a TP Link TD-W8960N modem router and the LAN ports on it seem not to be compatible with the Netgear as it does not work! The LAN port input indicator light from the router does not light on the Netgear but the other PC ports do light. The new router will not work with a TP-Link powerline adapter either. Direct connection, bypassing the Netgear works OK.

What please might be the problem?

Does the Edimax support MDI-X i.e. no matter what sort of cable (cross-over or patch) it should link.

There can be issues with some Ethernet ports not co-operating when using MDI-X or negotiating port speeds, so usual trick is to force one of the ports to a fixed speed e.g. 100 Mbps

As far as I can ascertain, neither router supports MDI-X. At least I cannot find any reference to it in their respective specifications.

The netgear does.

Find out if in router interface you can force the speed for a lan port

Thanks Andrew, will have a look but it will have to wait until tomorrow. If I can force the speed, I assume I reduce it?

Start at slowest and then find the fastest that works

No go! I have spent ages trying to find a way or indeed any reference to how force the port speed on this TP-Link router, and failed!

I will contact TPL Support and see if they know

Pretty sure you tried this - but the obvious needs to be said sometimes, you have pulled the power from the netgear and switched it back on

Oh yes! But it wont work through a TP Link powerline adapter either.

Apparently according to TPL support, LAN ports not configurable.
