virtual machine dedicated network card

Hi could some one please help me,

I have a virtual machine running CENTOS using virtual box on top of windows, I know you can set a phisical NIC to the VM rather than say bridging the hosts card.

Can anyone tell me if i can mak a NIC exclusive to the VM and bypass the host, obviously windows will see the card ETC and install it for virtual box to see it, But i dont want windows to use that NIC for traffic

Basically windows machine will use my virgin media connection and i want the VM to use my talktalk connection but not let the phisical pc use the TT at the same time if this makes sense

If you don't set the default gateway in Windows to the address of the TalkTalk router, then Windows won't use it.

As TM says, basically you can do it by setting a specific gateway in the VM

The first step is to set the network adapter setting in VB to "Bridged Adapter", which allows the virtual machine to have its own IP address within your private network.

Then configure Centos to use the IP of the TT router as its gateway, as opposed to the VM one. OR, if you are using a load-balancing router like a Draytek, in which case you cant use a different gateway, just configure the router to send traffic from the IP address of the Centos virtual machine to the TT connection.

thanks both for the reply, they will be separate routers, TT dont actually go live untill 2nd September just wanted to be prepared.

I host a plex server on the main system which hates multiple internet connections it plays havoc with the plex account integration which is why i dont want windows accessing both VM and TT.

The VM as i say is centos and host a few things test things and that one i want to use the TT and not the VM connection lol

so it seams simple really just dont set the default gateway and windows will ignore it all good

see how things go when its all set up lol

This is for if you have two physical NICs in the Windows host.

Try not configuring an IP address for Windows for that NIC.

Virtualbox's bridging network filter is loaded below the layer at which Windows itself uses the card,
on previous versions of Virtualbox / Windows (XP) I could actually disable that network card and the Virtualbox service could still use it.

But I can't vouch for later versions.

If you can't disable the NIC and still have bridging active, make up an unused IP subnet that you will treat as a dummy network
e.g. 192.168.255.*
Configure Windows IP address on that NIC from this range and with neither DNS nor gateway.
This in no way constrains the IP / subnet you can use on the Virtual guest (bridged).

Leave the real IP subnet and gateway on the other NIC that you do want Windows to use (for LAN and Internet).
