Connecting to home network

Can someone please explain how I can make my home wifi network available when I'm outside my home. I'd like to use my VPN settings on my mobile phone so that it would appear I'm connected to my home wifi when using my mobile phone?

Would I then be able to connect to my router from a foreign country via my mac, and get my mac to host as a wifi hotspot, making any other devices such as my iPhone, or Apple TV, appear to be connected to my home wifi. Also, to control my sky plus box via my iPhone, it needs to be connected to my home wifi network. Would connecting through a VPN allow this?

Sorry, I'm not sure of the details about using a Mac but it's possible to do all that using a Windows PC, so probably do-able with a Mac.
