Recommend a Wireless Access Point

A few years ago, I installed a new ADSL router for a friend and user their original (possibly D-link) hub as a remote WAP - around 50 metres of cable to reach it! It has been working well for years. They are located in remote Scotland and recently they have upgraded to a full FTTC service. They managed to change the BT business hub to the new one and all works fine at that level.

However, they then tried installing the old hub in place of the D-Link and of course there is no WiFi at the remote location (surprise-surprise). Changing back to the D-link has not restored it either so there is a good chance that addressing might be an issue.

So, I need recommendations for a WAP. It does not need 300Mbps and all the bells and whistles just one that is simple to install, almost a case of plug in set up SSID and password and nothing else.

Can recommend the TP-Link WA901ND

I think though you would have to go into the admin section and disable DHCP.

If they can not do that then Teamviewer is your friend.

Why would it have a DHCP server? there is no logical reason!

Interesting to see how that could actually achieve 450Mbps as the Ethernet is on 100Mbps!

And I really do want a plug, play and forget as I don't want to get too involved with this at present.

It won't achieve 450Mbps. It should though get between 150-200. Maybe not to other wired devices but between WiFi devices it could.

And there is no reason for it to have DHCP - it isn't a router.

As far as Plug and Play go there is some config I would be doing for any wap - changing the password and checking the security protocols being the main thing (that is probably all that would need to be done to be honest, other than that it should just work).

SSID and password fine, but that is all!

The device has a number of different modes it can operate in. If configured as a WAP the the DHCP server will be turned off. It also has POE which simplifies the wiring. The 450 Mb is just a representation of the wireless speed available.

I have one of the earlier, cheaper, versions of this - it was less than £20 I think (but not at Maplin!).

As stated it has loads of modes but if you choose the right one it shouldnt be an issue.

Can you not purchase one, configure it for them and then post it to them?

Could be a lot easier?

No Idea why it has DHCP but it does.

For interest as I could not remember what happened out of the box, I logged in and went through the quick set up routine.

It was very quick and easy.
