Hi folks, I'm new here.
So I have the following:
BTO Huawei HG612 modem.
Netgear R7000 on DD-WRT v24-sp2 (04/16/14) kongac.
Sky fibre unlimited.
Today is my Sky active line takeover day. I was previously on BT fibre and it worked fine with my current setup. When I was with BT, I had to make the connection in the router settings by selecting Connection Type: PPPoE and using [email protected] and bt as the password.
Now I have Sky fibre, I read online that I have to select Conenction Type: Automatic Configuration - DHCP, make sure that Use DNSMasq for DHCP and Use DNSMasq for DNS are both ticked, and then go in to Administration, Commands and use

2 | killall udhcpc

Save statup. (XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX = a1b2c3d4e5f6@skydsl|abcd1234 converted to hex).
and..

| iptables -I INPUT -p udp --sport 67 --dport 68 -j ACCEPT |
Save firewall.
Long story short - it just doesn't connect. I don't know what's going on. If I connect my laptop via ethernet to LAN2 on the HG612 and log in to the setting page, I can see it's connected to the DSL line at around 58000 kbps.
What am I doing wrong?

What am I doing wrong? Maybe you got the username and password wrong.
Maybe you did the hex convert wrong.
Maybe you did the DD-WRT settings wrong
There's a walkthrough here https://charleswilkinson.co.uk/2014/10/27/sky-fibre-...
If you have a Sky SR102 router, plug any lan port into LAN1 on the HG612 and see it that works.

Thanks, but that's the guide I've been following. Simply doesn't work. I've double checked everything (username/pass/hex convert) three or four times - definitely not mistakes. SR102 connects fine.

Does the SR102 connect fine though the HG612?
There's another way to get your sky username and password here http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/extracting-sky-router...

Did you already connect with your SR102 (sky hub). This is very important, when you switch to a new router / device on Sky, it takes approximately 2 hours before the network releases the old one and allows the new one.
This is due to Skys lease renewal interval for the external IP address of the old router.
It could all be setup fine, but you need to await that release.

Thanks, that's helpful. I'm not sure if that is the issue or not though. You see, before I opened the new SR102 for this line, I initially tried to connect straightaway (after switchover from BT to Sky) with my DD-WRT / HG612 setup that was already in situ and in use with BT fibre, using the username and password from another SR102 that I own (and is currently in use with a Sky ADSL service on another line in the same property). When it didn't work, I wondered if it might be due to the fact that the username and password was already in use / not for this line.
So I opened the new SR102 that has been provided to me for use on this Sky fibre line, set it up, connected and retrieved the username and password with Wireshark. I then disconnected it, put it away and re-setup my DD-WRT / HG612 rig and re-configured it with the new username and password (well, the hex conversion of same).
Still, do you think your suggestion explains my issue?

Are you using DHCP Option 61?
Also have you cloned the Sky router MAC, else you will likely need to wait?

Not sure. How can I check this?

Sky is very unique in the way their Fibre works.
There is a good guide here and I can confirm I got it working on DD-WRT. Any questions I can try to help out. It has been 1.5 years since I did this myself though!
https://charleswilkinson.co.uk/2014/10/27/sky-fibre-...
I would go back to a fresh setup and set everything up as per the guide.

That's the guide I followed, and to the letter. Went over it several times to ensure I hadn't missed anything. It's bizarre. I think I'm going to hard reset the router and start from scratch.

I think it's likely because they are not forcing MAC spoofing. So you will have to wait up to 2 hours...
So I advice spoofing that.
The Sky user one I find a bit more friendly, also used this in the past. Just change the firmware version to the latest one reported by your Sky Hub, the rest should be the same. The Charles Wilkinson one is based on the Sky User guide.
The Sky Hub MAC may be different as this was aimed at their sagecom router.

Afraid not. Have restored DD-WRT to factory settings. Then I followed the guide to the letter. This is the BusyBox:

Did you 2. Kill all existing udhcpc tasks using the following command:

Admittedly I didn't that time, no. Just tried again, this time is did "killall udhcpc" beforehand. Still exactly the same.

The thing I am not seeing is you spoofing your MAC to be the public facing MAC of the SR102, without doing this you need to wait for the lease to expire to connect with another router.
Option 61 is enabled that's good.
I would regenerate your credentials and ensure the MAC spoofing is occurring.
How are you getting the credentials to use? The online tools often only work for the sagecom router and below.
Here's a good guide for u/n and password:

Problem resolved!
I reset the HG612 to factory settings. After I did, I noticed that, in Basic>WAN, DHCP transparent transmission was enabled (before reset it was not enabled).
After that, ran the script, connected! DD-WRT all router now and seems to be working fine. Many thanks to everyone for there interest and help. Cheers!

Thanks man. I used Wireshark to obtain credentials and I am MAC spoofing.

Nice video guide I have used before:

You will get it going. Worth noting, once all setup, you need to turn the router off and off for it to connect (I did).
& people claim it's "easy" to get it going nowadays lol. I still disagree.

PHEW! & yes this would need to be enabled as Sky use a different DHCP option to most ISPs.
You do right using your own router, the Sky Hub is dreadful. Otherwise Sky broadband is brilliant.
Happy surfing!

Excellent news, well done.
Pity you didn't try the SR102 through the HG612 as I suggested but hey, it's fixed now
Are you on a static or dynamic IP address?

Again, many thanks for your help with this. Yes, I'm glad I have a DD-WRT router, not least because I can set custom DNS servers (Sky hubs can't even do that!), for US Netflix etc. Also the wifi range is better, and more customisable.

Damn - I knew there was something else I was meant to try! My apologies. Thank you for the suggestion anyway. I'm on a dynamic IP as I'm on Sky Fibre Unlimited (£0 per month for 12 months, plus £17.40 /month line rental). I'd like a static IP, but that means Sky Fibre Pro @ £30 /month plus line rental, and I can't justify the 30 quid jump. So I'm sticking with a dynamic IP and no-ip. Works well anyway.

Regarding the Sky Hub, you would have ran into lots of issues I am sure, you seem a power user. It reboots itself with more than 16 devices connected over the wireless for example. That's one of the many issues.
From a network perspective, the best network I have ever used is Sky's. It never slows down and great reliability. You will be very happy I am sure. Also wow that's an incredible price!
I am on BT paying £10 + line rental and thought that was v.good.

Well you did better than me with BT. I was on £12.50 per month for infinity 38mbps, plus line rental (paid for in advance). BT HH5 was shockingly bad, dropouts regularly and BT tech support telling me that up to 5 disconnects a day are deemed normal and not a fault (believe that?!). I changed to my Netgear R7000, the disconnects stopped. I begged BT to tell me the address to which I send them back their horrible HH5. They refused and said I have to keep it. When I moved to Sky, BT wanted £65 for the HH5, as I was slightly under the 12 month contract. That's the HH5 that doesn't work properly, I didn't want and neither did BT. BT are total cowboys.
|
|
|
|
Yeah I must say BT and TalkTalk customer services are equally bad & Virginmedia / Sky are worlds better (for CS).
Connection wise, I'm fairly happy with my HH5A, but there are some slowdowns over WiFi which require the odd reboot (every few days) which has only started recently. I do not have any drop outs on the actual line.
I'm pretty sure in 12 months I will migrate back to Sky and use my own equipment, overall was a better experience.

i found a very easy way to get sky fibre working with a different router. use option 61. moo@skydsl password foobar. i dont understand why people are using wireshark. 🙂
