Asus RT-AC87I 5 GHz radio performance

I'm finding the performance on the 5 GHz radio of these beast somewhat variable. Occasional bursts of jitter with the odd bit of loss.

I vaguely remember reading somewhere about these beasts overheating, and the 5 GHz radio reports temperatures way higher than the more reliable 2.4.

Dodgy for everyone or just me?

I have a Zyxel VMG8924-B10A and a Vodafone own brand router.

The 5GHz signal on both routers is weaker than the 2.4GHz.

The 5GHz signal from the Zyxel is comparable to the 2.4GHz signal from the Vodafone unit, which does not say much for the latter!

Both routers are next to each other in the attic of a bungalow. I am in a room not directly below using my HP laptop and Acrylic wifi monitoring software.

The 5ghz Quantenna radio on the RT-AC87U is notorious for being absolute pants (very unstable), largely due to poor firmware by Quantenna. If 5ghz wifi is a must, you're better off binning this and getting a router with Broadcom or Qualcomm radio chipsets which will be far better. E.g. Asus RT-AC88U, Netgear R7800, linksys EA8500 etc. The 2.4ghz radio on the AC87U is by Broadcom which is stable.

i have found 5Ghz as bit iffy on routers I have played with, I myself have never had a 5Ghz router until now, and I find the 5Ghz on that is ropey as well.
