Covering unused ports with electrical tape

In order to protect the unused ports on my switch and patch panel located in my somewhat dusty garage, I've stuck electrical tape over them to keep dust out.

Is this a bad idea? Just wondering if it could possibly cause overheating problems...

Only problem with tape is the residue left behind when you remove it. You could always just fit unterminated plugs.

Not a recommendation for the seller as I've never used them, just an example of a cheap source from Google.

Vodafone suppy their routers with at least one port covered up!

Overheating ??

Think about it, a router or a switch doesn�t ventilate through its LAN or WAN ports does it ?

Let's hope not or there will be a lot of fires if all the ports have cables in them.
