wiring a modem router in another room

[link to this post]

How do i go about moving my modem router in another room ?

At the moment i have an ethernet cable plugged into the master socket going across my living room through a brick wall then in to my modem router but i keep getting this message in my fritzbox 7530.

( The quality of the signal is being impaired by incorrect cabling. Please make sure that your line does not include any branching or multi-distributors. The branch is 9 meters long. It is impairing the transmission rate by around 13874 kbit/s.)

If the usual RJ11 cables that are around 2m long mean this warning goes away then suggests you have a duff cable.

It could be the two wires on the ethernet cable are split rather than twisted together which at 9 metres would cause issues.

Something like https://amzn.to/34P1hRJ might work better.

That cable would be great but it has to pass through a wall and is kinda pricey for a cable.

Not sure what you mean by this. You want the modem/router as close to the Openreach master socket as possible. Then use Ethernet from there to a switch wherever the modem/router used to be.

Some people choose to separate the modem and router functionality, e.g. with a second hand HG612 modem, or a Zyxel or similar box that can run in modem mode, and a router with an Ethernet WAN port.

Before you go to any great trouble, I think the message is meaningless. I had the same message from my Fritzbox, even when plugged directly into the test socket. I asked Zen what it means, they didn't seem to know.

I've given up on my Fritzbox and gone back to my HG612 / ancient Billion. I have a more stable connection and 1.2 Mbps upload instead of 1.0. Not a huge difference but every little is worth having.

If you do find out what the message is about and if it is true i'd be interested to hear.

So how did you get the Ethernet cable through the wall? RJ45 connectors are bigger.

If you put the ends on afterwards, did you use the right type and the middle pair of pins are they using a twisted pair

turns out that one end of the rj11 connector started coming away from the cable thats why i was getting the error.

i made up the cables a while ago using cat5e and just added the ends.
