Google Wifi, BT Smart Hub 2 & ONT

[link to this post]

Depending on when Openreach start Home engineer visits I will be having BT Full Fibre 900 installed and this is on order. This will be a massive difference to my current 2.7 Mbps speed. I understand that BT will supply a Smart Hub 2. I am using Google Wifi to help remove any wifi dead spots in my house and would like to continue using them. Having done a bit of research I understand that Google Wifi might not be compatible with the Smart Hub 2? My networking knowledge is very limited but i understand it's something to do with VLAN tagging? My question is, do i have to use the Smart Hub? I believe that Open Reach's ONT might incorporate a modem so can I plug Google Wifi directly into the ONT and just not use the Smart Hub? If not can someone please recommend an alternative to the Smart Hub 2 which I can use and is compatible with Google Wifi? Thanks.

If you don't want to use the Smart Hub at all, then set up a PPPoE session for the internet connection on the Google Wifi with a [email protected] username and a space will suffice as the password.

To use the Google WiFi if you don't have any additional mesh units, then set the google wifi into DHCP mode (i.e. bridge) and connect to the Smart Hub 2 (and turn off the BT units wifi)

Thanks for the response. Will I be losing any specific benefits if I don't use the Smart Hub? My intention will be just to use Google Wifi, I have the main one which is presently connected to my Post Office modem and another unit. I may have to consider adding more units to expand the range of Wifi into the Garden.

No idea of what the WAN/LAN performance of the Google kit is like i.e. can it shift 900 Mbps of traffic (plus upload) across the NAT part of the router while doing this in a PPPoE session.

It is a case of try and see.

In the first instance suggest you prove it all works for an hour or two using just the Smart Hub, that way if there is a fault later on you can quickly swap kit back for when you phone to report any fault. ISP will always blame your hardware if not using what they sent out.
