PPoE connection to ONT

Have been trying to connect PC direct to the ONT with a PPoE session - and totally failing

Dell Laptop running Win10 with dock/replicator which includes the Ethernet port. ONT is Nokia, and I know my ISP username and password.

Anyone care to give step by step instructions so I can see where I am going wrong.

Doing PPPoE you should get some feedback as to whether your computer is failing to receive PADO replies to the PADI packets it sends to discover a PPPoE server, or that you are making contact but just the authentication is failing.

If Windows isn't providing distinct error messages try checking in the Event viewer or perhaps boot into a live USB linux desktop, as those also have PPPoE connection setup (certainly anything based on Network Manager).

I know with DSL there can be VLANs involved on the Internet connection (such as where TV services are also provided) and don't know whether that still happens with fibre-based connections.

I'm currently evaluating an IKEv2 VPN setup with different client platforms and Windows 10 in terms of the default ciphers offered and the feedback for failed connections is pretty rubbish compared with almost anything else I have tried.

In Win10, I would try this:
* Settings -> Network & Internet -> Dialup
* Create new connection
(old style wizard pops up)

* Connect to the internet
* Set up a new connection anyway
* Broadband (PPPoE)
* enter username with domain, and password
I check the box to remember password, your choice

* Name the connection, I would use BTtest
* Check the box for Allow other people to use the connection
* Press connect
* Press skip button whilst its trying
* Press close

Now open the legacy Win7 style dialog (Start -> run -> ncpa.cpl)

* Locate "BTtest" in the list
* Right click, Properties
* Click on Security Tab
* Ensure top drop down is set to "optional encryption"
* Change the Checkboxes so that PAP is OFF, CHAP is ON, and MS-CHAPv2 is OFF
* Click OK, and click Yes to confirming no encryption
* Click OK to close dialog

Now right click the BTtest icon and choose Connect.

How annoying! Then it could be that you need more options than the build in Win10 PPPoE client can supply, such as a tagged VLAN or something like that.

Finally solved it ... it throws up another window that I had missed, and need to "connect" on that too.

Once working, have proved the ONT is capable of 305 down, 52 UP. Conclusive proof the problem is related to the Business Hub.
