Can you recommend a router for home office?

[link to this post]

I need a router that can do more than just standard Virgin Media hub. It will be mainly used for SOHO so that some working from home (WFH) and evening gaming sessions can be run by children while we are still working. Also, since it will be used for my little office, remote access such as VPN should be supported (at least 1-2 tunnels).
Broadband speeds of up to 1Gb expected, DDNS, VPN, usual firewall and NAT settings for Raspberry Pi projects such as a web server or smart home.
Any wifi router recommendations are welcome. Please post your router model used, what is it used for so, and why this one so that will help me to choose the best model. Price can exceed £130 but the range is up to £400. Thanks!

Fritz, Ubiquiti and MikroTik are popular, well supported brands of router that will have a number of models in your price range, depending on performance/ports etc.

Otherwise you could roll your own hardware and install something like OPNSense or pfSense.

I use an Asus RT-AX88U which is WiFi 6 as a router and set the Virgin Hub 3.0 to Modem Mode.

I can recommend the Draytek 2865. I use mine with a symmetrical gigabit FTTP connection and self host a ton of stuff on it with FW rules protecting it all + a couple of IKEv2 tunnels running in parallel. It copes with all this just fine at gigabit speeds.

I personally use a pfSense router I built and a Netgear access point on my M600 connection.

Thanks

I would look at a Qotom or Protectli box and run OPNsense or pfSense and a separate wifi setup.
A little more expensive but the best option for stability and reliability as you are WFH and there are benefits overall such as watching the Euros on UHD iplayer without buffering wink

You could also build one based on an HP T620+ or newer for >£100 as a backup.
This is not basic plug and pray consumer level though so will take some investment in time to setup but there are plenty of online guides to follow.

The main thing for me is support for AQM to prioritise traffic for you and not the kids gaming/streaming but with 1gbit this might not be an issue.

This is a good link explaining AQM - https://www.lullabot.com/articles/eliminating-robots...

My BQM - which is BT 80/20

OPNSense
PiHole
Unifi for Wifi

I have an Asus AX86U, it stands vertically so doesn't have a large footprint, supports VPN (is a doddle to configure OpenVPN server) and Asus AiMesh works well (I have two old RT-AC68Us as mesh points)
