wifi repeater

[link to this post]

Regards to all. I live in a very old house where the walls are very thick and the wifi router does not cover even half of my house. I'm thinking of getting a wifi repeater. Which ones do you suggest to me?

Can you run a cable to where you want the repeater?

If it is as bad as you say then a repeater will struggle to get a decent backhaul.

Indeed as MHC says - a mesh (or advanced repeater) based system relies on having a decent WiFi connection between the neighbouring access points (APs) to achieve an end-to-end service.

If your walls are impenetrably thick then you may find the performance of the mesh system poor at best - unless you can situate the AP's in spots where they can receive an adequate signal from the neighbouring stations.

Personally I would buy AP's that have a wired backhaul connection present AND that also have a mesh operating mode, so that you cover both installation scenarios.

Performance of a wired backhaul connection AP versus a mesh backhaul AP - wired will win hands down, every time. However the practicality (and cost) of installing structured cabling to the AP is a limitation.
