What is the best way to extend a network to an outbuilding?

[link to this post]

I was thinking of purchasing some 'outdoor rated' Ethernet cable on Amazon and connecting it between the existing router and purchasing a separate router for both Wi-Fi capability and wired connections. This would be placed in a plastic pipe roughly 5cm feet underground with some concrete slabs overlying it to make the installation appear nice and neat.

My only question was whether the 'threat' of lightning transferring to the Ethernet cable and frying up all connected components was a real threat, or is that overblown?

More chance of lightning striking the phone pole and sending a charge through that.

It is a real threat yes.
It's a very unlikely threat though and 1 that is indeed overblown.

As above there's a much higher likelihood of an overhead copper feed being struck by lightning and even that is extremely unlikely for most people. Although it does happen I've never seen it personally.

I have - and the overall results are not too nice on the bank blance or insurance claim!

Apart from all te electical and electronic bits that lost their magic smoke, I found an interesting area.

I opened up some truncking which, by that time had just a singel CW1308 running. The truncking was completely brown inside and an odour or burnt plastic but the cable looked intact. Close examination of teh CW1308 revelaed a small blcak dot about0.5mm diameter, that turned out to be a very small hole. I stripped the insulation off the cable only to find the inside was vapourised, so what probably happened was teh fumes, smoke and more got pushed out through the hole.

+1. MHC and I have raked over these coals before. Not a direct strike here, but very near, caused a ground equipotential fault (look it up) surge back fed through both power and copper structured cabling. Fried a lot of stuff.

This is a rural property in Suffolk. East Anglia is a lightning hotspot. Summer 2019 was particularly bad.

Just get 2 Nanostation 5AC locos and use them as a Point to Point bridge. Will work as long as you have power on both sides, make sure you've got POE injectors (or the right POE type from your switch, which is unlikely).

https://www.4gon.co.uk/ubiquiti-airmax-nanostation-l...

I've got 2 of the non-loco versions (for pass-through POE) and a LiteAP AC as the main access point for them. They've got a CCTV camera on each and have been completely rock solid for the past 18 months across the 300ft they need to cover.

If you have power to that building you could try a Powerline adapter.
I use a Devolo one to connect to a security cam and it also has a wifi extender built in so gives wifi coverage at the end of the garden too.

Not amazingly technical but low cost and has been remarkably reliable.

I was using the ones BT used to provide with their BTTV boxes picked up from car boots for years until it died.
