Sky FTTP - cable between ONT and router

[link to this post]

Hi everyone, just a quick question!

I'm having FTTP installed soon, but the location of the ONT and router will be temporary for about 12 months as next year I'm having the house renovated.

I could pay to have the ONT relocated after the works are complete (new ceilings and adding a double dormer) but I understand I can have the ONT anywhere and connect an ethernet cable which then goes to the router. I could then go from router to a switch in the centre of the house and then ethernet out to each room (aside from the bathroom!).

Question is, how long can the cable be and what cable do I need? Solid core Cat 6 or a patch lead or a crossover cable?

Want to keep full speed of course!

Many thanks for reading and responses.

Cat 5e is perfectly OK for 1Gbps and easier to handle than Cat 6 which is quite stiff. To do it properly you should use solid core to wall mounted back boxes with ethernet sockets, then standard patch leads to the devices (no crossovers). Maximum overall length is 100 metres so long enough for most houses.smile

Install an RJ45 socket close to where teh route r will be and another at teh ONT location. Connect both using solid core Cat6 or Cat5e - up to 90m.

Then use a short patch lead from ONT to socket and anothe patch from the second socket to router.

Thanks Realalemadrid and MHC.

That would likely be the permanent setup, but as a temporary measure in the interim could I use a 15m patch cable between the ONT and router until the more permanent solution? Thanks.

Yes you could, but make sure it is clipped in place and not dangling loose. I've done it before when my netwrok was vapourised.

Buy DECENT quality cables - C2G/CablesToGo for example. I would suggest the Ubiquiti cables but they are only 8m - so 2 back to back. https://uk.store.ui.com/uk/en/pro/category/accessori...

Thanks MHC. I will probably manage with a 10m cable (want it round the edge of the room so it's tidy until the work starts. Any other suggested suppliers? Don't want to risk a naff one off Amazon!

Thanks MHC. Assuming I don't need to bother with screened in a domestic setting?!

You should be fine unless you are going close to the back of a fridge or solar inverter ...

No fridges and no solar inverters...!

Was looking at Rhinocables initially but they are CCA!
