Cat6 Length With FFTP

[link to this post]

Feels like an age since I've posted. . . but anyway.

I'm replacing some long length Cat5e cables and Cat6 is the obvious choice.

However, I was wondering with a 1Gb FTTP (shortly to get) what length with a standard UTP cable would you see speed degradation? Would I need a higher grade cable if going over say 30m?

Ta

Max dustance should be 100m - 90m of insfrastructure plus 2 x 5m patch leads. You will be fine at 30. And even Cat5e should support it too. My home network has many Cat5e links of over 30m which run 1Gbit.

I've got a 70m run of Cat5e that runs at 1Gbps fine.

Thanks guys, my old cables are bound with electrical tape in places after being well trod on and need replacing.

The only thing I'd add is to watch what you're buying, if it's cheap it's likely to be CCA (Copper Clad Aluminium). Which should be fine for gigabit speeds, although it won't be of any use for 2.5Gb or faster if that's something you're considering. The main concern with CCA is its higher resistance, making it a potential fire hazard should you be running PoE devices. If you need faster than Gb or PoE then look for cable that's UL or ETL certified.

CAT5e is certified up to 100m for 1Gbps and 2.5Gbps. It will do you just fine.

CAT6 does the same. It's also certified for 10Gbps, but only up to (I think) 55m.

CAT6A is certified for 10Gbps up to 100m.

CAT6 and CAT6a are thicker/stiffer and harder to terminate. So I use CAT5e.

However, the most important thing is to get genuine certified cable, not some cheap Chinese knock-off which claims to be standards-compliant but actually isn't.

That's who I'm using currently, I hope they're ok as I'm pondering making the jump from gigabit to 2.5g soon.

I have had some of their cables for a couple of years, and they are fine for me.
