Community Fibre IPv6 and Huawei AX3 Pro Settings - Help!

[link to this post]

Hi all,

I am on Community Fibre 1Gbps connection and using my own router (Huawei AX3 Pro). I am also running my own Pihole and Unbound (Recursive DNS) resolver. I am struggling to set it up in a way where I can use my Pihole as my DNS for IPv6. There are two issues I am facing 1) if I add PI’s IPv6 address on WAN DNS as soon as I hit Save button, router refreshes itself and PI gets a new IPv6 address making the whole process useless. Second, if I leave everything on Auto, my devices get a lag when making a DNS query as it tries to do it over IPv6 and then it uses IPv4 address. Additionally, some IPv6 devices use CF DNS instead of Pihole.

Starting with first settings, should I use SLAAC or DHCPV6 or Manual? Which would be ideal? If it is Manual, how do I get the details for Address/64 and should it be 64 or something else?

Second if I select SLAAC or DHCPV6, I can add my Pi’s IPv6 GUA address which I can ping from other devices but as soon as I hit save, the router refreshes itself and PI’s IPv6 address changes leading me into loop. How can I fix this?
If I were to use Manual, what details should I enter in the fields such as Prefix, Prefix length, Preferred lifetime, Valid lifetime?

Third should I leave LAN settings on Auto for Router broadcasting or Manual? If it is manual what details should I enter in the fields such as Prefix, Prefix length, Preferred lifetime, Valid lifetime?

Fourth should I leave the DHCP on Auto or Manual or Disabled? If it is Manual, what details should I use for Prefix, Prefix length, Preferred lifetime, Valid lifetime? I think I can add PI’s IPv6 address as DNS here.

I hope someone can help me as I am getting nowhere with this.

I am aware of what Pi-hole is but have never used it. I also have a working IPv6 network which largely seems to have set itself up. The one bit of help I can offer is that you have to configure it with a fixed IP address for the internal clients. So, remembering that these days you can have multiple IP addresses on an interface, it looks to me like you let it do its own thing as far as DNS queries are concerned, using whatever IP prefix your ISP gives you, but you should give it a fixed IPv6 address on the fe80:: prefix for your clients to use as DNS. There may be other ways of tackling this.

This is not the guru answer, it is the peer support answer!

Use your pihole servers local-link address, should start with fe80: and is based on it's MAC address usually.
