I'll celebrate when they finally have a "stable" branch for v7.x (i.e. primarily bugfixes)

How does RouterOS compare to OPNsense? I see there are versions that will run on Intel based hardware.

I use it on MikroTik hardware. If I was using an Intel box I’d probably run something else to be honest, unless you specifically wanted some feature only available in ROS or you were super familiar with it.

They're different products catering for different use cases, though with a lot of overlap. RouterOS is a replacement for the Cisco and Juniper routers that might be performing a core network function such as operating as a PPPoE server, doing eBGP, running an MPLS link etc. OPNsense/pfSense are more aimed at being replacements for an edge firewall box that a business might otherwise buy from Watchguard, Sophos, Sonicwall etc.

RouterOS can perform a lot of the same tasks as OPNsense but the barrier to entry is a bit higher as the interface isn't as friendly.
