Fibre Connection using Fritz!Box 5690 Pro

[link to this post]

Hello

Currently have BT FTTP using Asus router plugged into the Openreach ONT

Was considering getting a Fritz!Box 5690 Pro which has a direct input for the fibre cable and works as a modem & router so in theory I wouldn't need to use the ONT

Has anyone had any success in doing this?

Thank you
Jim

Just don't.

There is no benefit. You just end up connecting to the incoming with a fibre, which has to be the right sort and clean. If it breaks, you have to buy another, which will be more difficult that replacing an ethernet cable. And if you move, you have to put the ONT back and make sure the connection is clean.

Following from the post saying DONT DO IT - I was just wondering in practice how doing what I planned to do would work

As I would be bypassing the Openreach ONT and using the internal modem of the Fritzbox with the fibre plugged directly into the fibre port on the router is there any 'configuration' that needs to be done by Openreach or BT (as my ISP) to allow this to work or should it simply be 'plug and play'?

I could use a fibre terminal junction box and tidy up the incoming fibre cable and protect it from further damage and then run a seperate fibre cable from that directly into the fibre input on the router?

Something like this?

OK, do it then, if you must.

The beauty of the ONT plus router solution is that the ONT is theirs, the router is yours. You don't get to fiddle with the fibre. They don't get to set up your LAN or fiddle with it.

Fibre to the router is nuts. No benefit.

The Openreach ONT is the demarcation point (like the master socket on DSL) so if you touch the ONT or the fibre upstream of that you are playing with Openreach property with the risks that brings if you get anything wrong.

Are you hoping you can pop the fibre directly into the router (bypassing the ONT) and everything will just work?

If you do then I would suggest you're not the right person to be mucking around with this type of technology as you clearly don't understand how a PON works and how the ONT and OLT interacts. Openreach don't support Users replacing their ONT as each ONT on the PON is registered with the associated OLT (with an encryption key) and you have to work around that to get things working.

This is quite entertaining.

<OP> I have a great idea that nobody's ever thought of. Will just ask the experts.

<Experts, in harmony> Don't do it, dumb idea, can't work.

<OP> Well, I'll try it anyway.

My suggestion: ask your ISP what they think. If not in favour, try asking any other available ISP. Take best of 3.

Or, just do what any sane person would do.

This is going against the Openreach product terms and conditions which is supplying an ONT as the demarcation point. The service is provided as an Ethernet connection at the ONT.

It certainly isn't Plug and Play, you would have to configure the Fritzbox fibre port to emulate the Openreach ONT configuration and it also requires the serial number of the ONT as authentication. Do you know what configuration facility is provided on the Fritzbox? There is no way that Openreach or BT will do any configuration for you.

Encrypted data from all the users on the fibre PON (usually up to 30) arrives at your ONT and your data is extracted. Incorrect configuration could affect all the users on the PON, I don't think Openreach would be too happy about that.

Add in that the OP can potentially mess it up for 30 other people. Add in that if the op breaks the sc/apc connector or the cable, the op would then have to shell out costs for an or visitor learn and buy expensive equipment to fix it .......
