Linksys SPNMX55GC Mesh Router - no backup/restore

[link to this post]

Up until I switched to FTTP (with Gigaclear) earlier this year I'd been happily using Netgear routers (with the odd Asus and Draytek along the way) on ADSL and VDSL, and was quite happy that I was able to backup (and restore) the config whenever I wished.

However these Linksys nodes don't have such a facility even though the inbuilt help suggests they do. (I've confirmed this in a couple of webchats with Linksys tech support),

I have multiple (30+) devices on my LAN requiring fixed IPs and a fair bit of port forwarding so configuring a router is quite time consuming. Plus I'm wary of upgrades which may require a reset/reconfiguration.

Is this (no backup/restore facility) a thing with modern mesh routers, or is it just that the Linksys ones are "sub-optimal" (if so what would be a better choice)?

nothing to do with mesh - just a feature limitation if it's missing.

from linksys

The Linksys SPNMX55GC-UK is only for Gigaclear subscribers in the United Kingdom.

so this unit has its own special firmware, and also the smart wifi units do not have a backup - restore function. You may need to change router if this is of importance to you.

Quite so, and Linksys confirmed to me that their "standard" (.i.e. non-Gigaclear) units are also missing that functionality - even though the inbuilt text says otherwise!

I will probably change units just as soon as I've resolved the ongoing connection drops and identified a suitable replacement (mesh WiFi is something of a novelty to me). Obviously then though any tech support calls to Gigaclear will be met with the response "you're not using a Gigaclear-supplied router so we can't guarantee to solve your issue" frown

That's why you keep the router and reproduce a problem on that before contacting support.

Indeed, as I did for years with my Plusnet-supplied "Homehub" which I replaced with various flavours of Netgear, but when the problem is unpredictable and my router config is highly customised (address reservations, port forwarding etc.) switching back to the supplied router is non-trivial.

Actually with Plusnet I hardly ever encountered the stock response and was fairly easily able to rebut it, and only once actually had to reinstall their supplied router. I don't have enough experience yet with Gigaclear to know if the same will apply. Once I get the current problem of dropped connections resolved I'll probably bite the bullet and get some better hardware smile
