NEWBIE - NEED ADVICE FOR INCREASING SPEED ON HOME WIFI

[link to this post]

Hello, firstly i apologise for being a newbie to this, and if i have posted in the wrong forum.
My parents have SKY wifi at home, its ridiculously slow, about 5mbps. I got them a booster off Amazon to try and help, but only went to 6.3mbps. They live in a road where they have not modernised the broadband and looks like its not going to be done for a long time. They will not be moving anytime soon, but the question i have;

Is there anything i can buy them to help increase their speed, in anyway, a mesh system or something??

Thank you so much in advance for any advice.

Very much depends on where the speed is being slowed down.

If they are on FTTC then it may be the fastest their line can go. What you need to do is do a speedtest from a device plugged directly into the router via an ethernet cable. Also, be careful not to mix units - if you are doing a download in a browser it will be measured in megabytes per second rather than megabits per second. Use a few speedtesters (maybe speedtest.net and thinkbroadband's own tester for a start). See what they are getting.

If they are getting high speeds at the router but not on wireless then it may warrant a wireless upgrade and possibly a mesh. If the speeds at the router are low then no matter what you do with the wireless it won't help.

If the speeds are low at the router then it is possible their could be a fault on the line that Sky would need to look at - or it could just be the maximum the line is capable of.

Also, check the broadband maps on thinkbroadband to check what is available at the address. It is possible that another provider might have provided modern (FTTP) infrastructure even if OpenReach (who Sky are likely using) have not.

Find out what the problem is before you buy anything. Calling it Sky wifi just obscures what the problem might be. You need to know what type of connection you have [ADSL, FTTC or FTTP] and then work out whether it is delivering what it is supposed to. For this you need to use a wired ethernet connection. Once you know eat your line is capable of and have fixed it is necessary, then you can look at the wifi.

THANK YOU for your advice. I have a feeling they are part fibre and that is the max the line allows, everything i have tried and tested before shows the same speed. So nothing they can do about it...unless they move! lol - i do appreciate your reply! thank you

It is my experience that there is often things that can be done within the home to speed up FTTC if this is what they are getting from Sky.

Please describe exactly what the set up is at the house, how, and what is connected where?

So what have you tried? Just so we don't go repeating stuff you have already done.

Are you able to log in to the router?
