Maximum telephone extension lenght?

Hi,

My house is being renovated and I have rented a house two doors down. As this is only short term (3 months) I want to avoid having to setup new BT contracts and broadband.

If possible I would like to run a extension to the rented house, I would estimate appox 100m in length. Is this possible?

What is the best way to do this - ethernet out of my router, or telephone extension then use ADSL modem/router in rented house?

Anybody know where to get approx 100m outdoor cabling?

I may consider a wireless option but feel cabling will give me better performance.

Considering the line's probably gone several kms on its way to your house, provided the cable you use is good enough, I doubt there'd be a problem (just don't buy the stupid cheap extension stuff from B&Q).

To run a phone extension out of the premises is probably a breach of terms of service.

I think I would do ethernet, as the service is arguably provided at the router.

Running 100m of phone cable would almost certainly degrade the signal to noise on the line. Ethernet would be a better option.

You will also, legall, need a wayleave across any intervening properties.

Sorry to say this, but if you don't know that, maybe you shouldn't be doing it.
But, they'll crimp or screw into terminals in the face-plate at one end (do not attempt to connect to the incoming side of your current master socket), and into similar terminals at the other end.
As has been mentioned elsewhere, you may be breaking your service agreement with BT if you take a 'phone line out of one property, and into another.
Plus, you'll probably need permission/approval to take a wire through/past adjoining properties (unless you own all three in a row).

I worked with the phone service in a university.
My understanding is that the important thing is whether its twisted pair and that the extra 100m should not degrade service much as adebov has suggested unless your connection is marginal anyway - try it!. Just connect a single pair and try your filter and router in the new house.
External grade cable was (in 1985) grease filled to keep out moisture, was messy and was not allowed to be used inside because of fire hazards. Internal grade cable has pvc insulation which is porous and slowly allows water through which rots the conductors. Where to join them was an interesting dilemma for the BT inspectors to generate lots of mischief!
