homeplugs compatibility

I got to homeplugs version 1.0, 85Mbps, connecting my computer to the router, I now want to connect the PS3 and Wii the same way, my plan is to buy a Solwise homeplug with three ethernet connections on.

I at some point want to update the network, but at the moment don't want to replace the two I have if I can help it. but I been looking at homeplug AV 200Mbps and thought about getting the version of that with the three ethernet connections. but I don't think that will work with my old homeplug 1.0

what is confusing is on the broadbandbuyer.co.uk website it says

Whilst HomePlug AV is incompatible with HomePlug 1.0, it will co-exist with 1.0, the most widely deployed high-speed powerline communications standard in the world.


so confused me, do that mean that if I get one of these plugs that it will work with my old system but at a slower speed, if so I could update the others at another time or do it mean it just won't work?

My understanding was that whilst you have any HomePlug 1.0 on the network it will pull down the speed of any AV devices.

Time to ebay off the old ones as you upgrade to offset some of the cost

The 85mbps and 200mbps ones will not talk to each other.

You sure? had a mixture of devolo at one time and seem to recall they did work. My 85's are out on long term loan so cannot double check

I wonder to be honest if I really need 200Mbps plugs anyway,

You can have two networks. One using 85s, one using 200s.

The choice of "coexist" instead of "compatible" is a bit crafty.

If you don't have any already just get the 200s, you can buy them for £30-35 a pair these days for single port ones, multi-port aren't much more.

No point in having two networks, just wondering now if 85 is fast enough that is in theory about 42 each way, do i really need any faster than that?

I don't i do, even if I got a faster internet connection, if I went for fibre say then the 85Mbps should do the job ok.

Don't forget that it's most unlikely that you'll get 85Mbps in practice, it's definitely an "up to" figure and determined by your house wiring.

The best I ever got out of my 85Mbps units was about 18-20Mbps each way, which was enough for my main requirement (to run a printer in another room) and didn't have any problem supplying an AppleTV either.

Might have been a different matter if I'd wanted it to connect to the FTTC modem...

Just buy the 200s...

The problem here is that I already got two 85s that I use between the computer and my router, buying others that are not compatible seems a waste of money. I could buy two and as been said use too different networks for the time being, but that means two plugs where my router is. I have to think about this.
