Random new cabinet appeared in our village

[link to this post]

Hi all,

I have been pushing Openreach to try and get our deadspot upgraded without any positive results - they initially quoted £2,500 per house for FTTC, then refused to give me a quote to give us our own cabinet in the village (we run from another village over 2km away).

But on monday a new cabinet appeared in the village with no notice or explanaition....my question is how do i get any info on what their plans are for this cabinet? Are they connecting the whole village into it? or are they just going to let it sit because no-one has filled in the right paperwork?

Any ideas?

Thanks

Chris

It will be NP70LY or close by....I think it is the following cabinet:

Gilwern Exchange Cabinet P12 FTTC being Built, live due by July 2019 Phase CEO Escalation 21b

I just want to know who they intend to connect to it.
Thanks

Basically all properties to the south and east of the cabinet will be covered

Thanks, I assume you know this from some other source...is this something I can see or not?

Appreciate your response anyway.

Seems the logical solution given expected cabinets position which you gave and speeds of premises currently

I agree it's the logical solution - so noting that it is BT Openreach is it actually what is going to happen..wink

The vast majority of what appears in paper plans happens, and this increases once you start to see hardware appear.

Witchunt Is a reliable source with info you cannot see. Unless the cab comes up against unforeseen difficulties ( Someone complains about location or access to power) he will be 100% correct.

I hope you are the correct side of the cab to get an improved service?

Bear in mind that it will be some months after the cabinet gets powered up before existing broadband customers transfer as there is a statutory consultation period with all ISPs to gain their assent to moving their customers from their existing cabinet to the new cabinet.

We got a new AIO cabinet a couple of years ago due to our distance from the existing FTTC cabinet and it took about 6 months after the cabinet went live before the existing customers had their connections moved and their FTTC speed up from 10+ to 60+ Mbps (and prior to that ADSL < 2Mbps).

Thank you all for your help and info.

I will keep an eye on the changes and maybe try and grab the openreach team if I see them there.

Hopefully it will be as hoped...some of the houses round here struggle past 2mb/s and I'm lucky to get 7 or 8....anything over 20 would be a real pleasure.

Thanks again

It is nice that you have a new cabinet.

I am in a similar position to you in that I am 3300m from the nearest FTTC cabinet but there are only seven properties here so we are not likely to get an infill.

Enjoy your new speed, and hopefully soon too.

The annoying bit from my point of view is that I approached openreach 6 months+ ago and asked them to do exactly what they seem to be doing and they refused to even give me a quote.

Good luck with your effort...depressingly I think the smaller communities will always struggle.

I don't think the OP has any existing FTTC service available so there won't be a live to live migration delay.

I suspect plans had existed for a long time but funding may have been issue. I guess money came from somewhere.

witchunt - you are probably correct. I know where the money came from, a big building firm want to use our village hall as an office for a year - they need decent broadband. I'm just annoyed that when I asked for quotes and information as part of a community broadband group I didn't get told it was potentially already on the cards....would have saved a lot of effort..wink

We have FTTC, but from cabinet P3 which is almost 1.5km away on very old copper.and so although I'm paying for Superfast fibre I can't get 10mb/s
