Directly to Data Centres where we can. The benefits over "last mile" Fibre are many fold.

Redundant routing capable, secure, redundant power feed , multiple carriers, oodles of capacity, rack space and no BT involvement !

It does increase the complexity of the Wireless side a bit but it is well worth the results, especially when one network alone sends at east 10 TB a month of data to customers.

Also needs access to suitable antenna hosting sites (aka masts) smile

A lot depends on where you have come from. As Bill says, he has a long, long history with wireless comms and no doubt also on how to sort out cost effective antenna hosting sites.

Local fibre backhaul is an excellent, stable technical solution - but as Bill says it comes at a big cost. However, if you cannot locate cost effective antenna sites then you have little real option.
