Just found out theres an LLU provider available?

[link to this post]

Hey.
Just found out that xilo.net offer some LLU packages thru my exchange.
Is it worth trying/changing to an LLU provider?
Any pros and cons?

Cheers.

It will depend upon which LLU operator it is and what packages are available.

Some LLU operators offer unlimited usage and some don't.

Well initially I didn't think there were any LLU operators available in my area until a friend mentioned they'd signed up with Xilo and they are on the same exchange as me - I checked availability thru their website and I can get their LLU packages.
Unlimited usage isn't an issue for me as I don't average much in the way of downloads in a given month. I mainly use the broadband for gaming, PC and console.
I just wondered what cons there were really.
I understand LLU doesn't use the IP profiling system and in most cases what your router initially syncs at is what you'll get - I take it this is the case?
How reliable is LLU compared to a BT based package?
I was just after LLU users experiences really.

Cheers for the reply.

I know its available as I spoke to one of your reps on live chat yesterday I think it was.

I was just interested to get some experiences of using an LLU product really.

In general LLU is better than BT-based systems as you say. Having said that, some LLU ISPs still under-supply the resources needed in order to maximise profit, so there can still be congestion and throttling.

To the best of my belief the LLU suppliers Xilo use do not have this problem and Xilo LLU is therefore fine.

If you can post your line stats then I, or someone else as I'm about to walk the dog, will be able to estimate your probable speed, far more accurately then the BT database estimates that ISPs supply. See here for help if you need it.

Ok current line stats on the router are...

Down Speed 17027000 Up Speed 1157000 SNR Margin 14 db
Loop Attenuation 19 db

I think I experience congestion at the exchange during peak hours so would this still affect me if I moved to an LLU product? Also have been victim of a few BT network issues in the past would routing (or whatever) remain the same?

Thanks for your help. I should point out that in the past the SNR margin would fluctuate from 6 db to 15 but this may have been because its a relatively new line regards broadband.

Cheers for the responses. (sorry for any spelling mistakes)

That high noise margin is nasty, and taking a lot off your speed.

However it looks as though (still with IDNet?) you are on a BT 21CN connection, and that is far from robust wrt things like noise margin. How much does it fluctuate now? When did it first go unstable?

You say the line is fairly new to broadband. But previous to IDNet you were with Demon?

Exchange congestion is comparatively rare, though it does exist. It is usually down to inadequate ISP provision at their end. As I said, Xilo LLU seems to be fine in that respect, and even if there is exchange congestion on your BT circuit I wouldn't expect that normally to affect LLU. (Though not being highly technical, ma\ybe there are circumstances in which it could).

Is the noise margin really that bad?
I been with IDNet since June of last year but I recently moved house in December so the line was installed the beginning of December.
Initially the noise margin was 6 db but with the whole 10 day settling in period it would fluctuate with each retrain (correct term?) of the line and settled to about 12db fluctuates between 12 db and 15 db, but only really if I drop the connection myself or if it drops due to BT related issues.
I know from past experience that it does take an inordinately(sp) long time for the noise margin to drop once it settles on a given value.
To be honest I am sick of the whole IP profiling system etc but I wasn't aware LLU was available at my exchange as I checked with BE and O2 but neither had their LLU packages available through my exchange.
It was only due to a friend mentioning Xilo that I checked and was suprised to find they offer packages thru my exchange.
This post was really just to get some ppls experience of an LLU product as I don't know all that much about LLU.

Cheers
