TalkTalk LLU..vivaciti + other resellers

[link to this post]

I'm looking to change my ISP. Currently with NewNet with 12GB/month allowance which is no longer enough for our needs (2 laptops, youtube, iplayer, smartphones etc).

Samknows says Talk Talk is enabled for my exchange (NDWES) http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/NDWES . 21CN WBC is set for 31/07/12 and FTTC in 2012. However it seems from a bit of digging that only 14% of one cabinet for one postcode is to be FTTC - not my cabinet though but one corresponding to a newish estate.

I'm considering Vivaciti or perhaps other resellers of TalkTalk LLU. I don't want to get shoved on an Enta product so can Vivaciti confirm i can indeed get the variety LLU £19.80 deal. Will i still be stuck on upto 8Mbps though until 31/07/12?

Phone line is with post office where i want to leave it for now.

I'm not sure what speed i'm going to get but TBH anything comparable to current ADSL Max would be fine.

Current stats from Netgear DG834PN:

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 7808 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 32.0 db 16.0 db
Noise Margin 6.0 db 22.0 db

Thanks

Andy

Hi,
I can confirm if you order our Variety package, that is what we would provision for you.
Looking at your line stats you would be looking at a connection speed of around 15meg give or take.

Your phone line would remain unchanged, it is just the broadband we would provision (unless you wanted to change the phone to us at a later date)

Let us know how you get on and speeds. I'm currently on Variety and liking it apart from the odd blip.

I went live on Vivaciti Variety (Talktalk LLU) this morning

Currently:

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 11787 kbps 1022 kbps
Line Attenuation 35.5 db 18.5 db
Noise Margin 6.2 db 8.8 db

But thinkbroadbands speedtest is only giving me 0.1mbps upload and download:

My Broadband Speed Test

i updated Java and it made no difference. Tried to run on port 80 but appeared to just sit there doing nothing.

Somewhat better :
My Broadband Speed Test

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 11787 kbps 1022 kbps
Line Attenuation 35.5 db 18.5 db
Noise Margin 5.3 db 8.9 db

So the introduction of TalkTalk equipment adds 3.5db to the line attenuation compared to my connection on NewNet.

Yeah its fairly common for an increase in attenuation when going from ADSL1 > ADSL2+, mine increased by 4db.

That speed test seems about right for your sync speed. Which router are you using? As your are on a short-ish line (stable?) it might be worth lowering your downstream noise margin to 2-3 db to get around 13 meg sync speed smile

Looking good. I usually do best of 3 on TBB tester or use the BBC iPlayer speedtest which runs 4 seperate tests. Tweaking your router might increase sync.

Netgear DG834PN with netgear V1.03.39 firmware. The line seems stable enough to me so i might do as you suggest and see if i can get away with a 4db target noise margin.

Sync speed & throughput about right for your line.

Think Vivaciti overestimated your Sync by forgetting attn. would go up by 3 dB when going to ADSL2+; easy to do.

Having played with DMT there doesn't seem to be a huge amount to be gained beyond about another 1.5Mbps of download speed (i.e 15% increase in download speed for 50% decrease in target SNR). The speed isn't really as important to me as the amount of data we can transfer per month...anything more in speed than i got before was going to be a bonus. Speed will come when we get FTTP smile

Worth checking your house wiring, small improvements which werent worth doing on an almost maxed out <8 Meg service might provide another 1Mbps on ADSL2+ - it did for me !

rarrar, i already tinkered with the wiring a while back. I confess i haven't plugged the router directly into the master socket to see what difference my extension wiring makes now i've moved to LLU though. So i might give it a go and see what the stats say.

Probably not a huge difference as i've got a filtered faceplate on the master socket with phone and adsl split down different twisted pairs in a single cat5e cable to the lounge where the router is. Not ideal but the master socket is in the hall cupboard with no power sockets nearby. Ring wire isn't connected though.

If working from the back of the filtered faceplate for both voice and adsl I would certainly be inclined to run adsl via the cat5e cable to the router and use a separate phone extension cable for the phone in the lounge. The front of the faceplate could then be used for an extension to a phone located in another part of the property if required.
