ADSL24 speed loss since I switched from BT

[link to this post]

I've got a ongoing ticket so I not needing anybody from ADSL24 to reply directly but asking for other's people's advice too to see what they think.

OK I was with BT up to yesterday then I migrated in. Few things I have noticed though. For a start my speed.

And my router stats (swanky new £120 router) very nice

When I was with BT? I was connecting roughly anywhere between 2270 and 2350kbps so already as you can see there's quite a drop. Upload speed was 448kbps so in that aspect ADSL24 are better. The line attention is worrying me though as 65.0db is surely not right? I was at 58db with the BT connection (I do have a long line though as it is so any speed loss is quite significant for me) Just wondering if I should do anything else or what do people think? Or should I just leave it with the guru's at 24? (They are raising it with the suppliers to see what can be done)

A couple of questions.

1) What Wholesale network have you been put on? C&W, TalkTalk etc. Some networks set the min SNR margin at 9dB (BT sets as low as 3dB).

2) What connection technology are you connecting with. ADSL1 or ADSL2+ ?

Long time no speak martin smile

to answer you.

1. I'm on the C&W LLU Home (whatever that means)

2. I was connecting on well I left the router (Netgear DGND3700) to AUTO but I switched that do ADSL2+ as advised in my ticket. (Ticket's been updated to say that they still trying to figure out the right profile for my line)

I guess you have moved from BT ADSL Max to ADSL2+, but on your long line you won't benefit from that. That's why your attn. has increased.

Try forcing router to run with ADSL Mode = ADSL2 (G.992.3) or even ADSL (G.DMT) which should be like your BT connection but with higher upstream. Repost stats.

WARNING: Edit out your MAC addys & IP addy from your stats to deter interlopers. You only really need last 4-line block.

That'll be why.. The default SNR is 9db. You might be able to get them to lower it but C&W generally refuse.

Going to respond to each of the other 2 people that posted.

In resspnse to XRay:

On my router I have ADSL ADSL2 and ADSL+ Should I try each one and see what happens?

In response to uno:

Is there a possibility I may be stuck with this? This is my last ticket response:

As I said previously try with ADSL & ADSL2 and report stats. You are already on ADSL2+.

Can't understand why ADSL24 are still humming and haring when they could suggest this obvious experiment.

Just do what XRaySpeX said. Alter your router settings so it does not connect at ADSL2+.

Only allow ADSL2 and ADSL (G.DMT).

You should also have removed you IP address and MAC address, as he advised frown. You need to ask in TTTS for staff/mods to remove them. Open invitation to hackers.

Before I go ahead and try this? 1 more question. My router has VC and LLC based multiplex method. Currently it's at VC-Based. Do I keep it at VC at all times?

Yes. Unless your ISP tells you different. Change that on your connection and it just won't work.

Strange that your attenuation on both of those is higher than the ADSL2+ one. That's assuming it was in fact connecting on ADSL2+.

The 9dB noise margin does cost you at least 500kbps. Probably quite a lot more than that.

Have you tried what your old router shows, on ADSL?

The old router I has was the BT Home hub. Should I connect that back in? Surely the new router is not causing the problems? (It's this)

I'm just saying that given that you have two routers and you are having problems, you can eliminate router faults by trying the other and seeing if that works OK. Standard fault tracing/elimination procedure.

i was on ADSl24 Cable and wireless with a long line, when i moved from Bt to ADSL24 I had a faster sync and connection.

with advice from people on these forums, I got myself a Netgear DG834GT for about £20 from ebay and put in DGteam firmware. that meant I could change the SNR via the router as there is no profiling or line management on cable and wireless.

It made a difference, I got almost another megabit by doing that.

C&W are just unwilling to reduce the SNR to 6dB no matter how much we (or other partners) shout. They have a philosophy of not wanting to change a working service, so would rather us lose customers than allow a 6dB profile.

That's why we have not proceeded down that line already smile

I never suggested changing NM against your philosophy.

I suggested downgrading ADSL Mode which either you or user can do, And then only as a trial.

Ah sorry, misunderstand your request.

I'm sure one our guys would have suggested this already, but I haven't seen this ticket myself. From the look of it, it would just appear that the extra 3dB noise margin is accounting for the slight drop in SYNC speed, rather than any issue with the line itself. What we can do about that I'm not sure, unless the customer has a router that allows the SNR to be tweaked (e.g. any broadcom based router).

Thanks

Except at least Thomson/Speedtouch ones later than the 585v6 firmware 6.1.4.3.

Or can some newer ones be tweaked again, and I just haven't noticed?

Hey guys. Sorry it taken me so long to reply. I totally forgot! Anyway, I was originally going to connect my home hub I had to see if anything was going to change in the line (as requested) but that went out the window that idea as BT demanded it back! and I got no other devices I could use to connect to phone line other than my expensive router. Anyway, We are no further on! Their supplier really is causing a problem here with lack of response to them. I supposed to be getting my noise margin reduced to 6 but C and W their supplier are causing problems. Still ongoing really with no real updates (although since I upgraded firmware to test version i've not dropped the connection again) but speeds still unchanged
