help me choose

[link to this post]

Hello! I'm planning to move to a new house which has Openreach FTTH and I'm looking to choose an ISP (I'm in an area now where Virgin is the only high speed option). I'm considering:

iDNet
Cerberus
Aquiss
Trunk Networks
AAISP

Prices are close enough among these to not really matter to me (on the aprox 900/100 services). I'd like to know, besides some Openreach obviously, what backhaul I'm likely to be on with each of them (eg Aquiss is Entanet, or used to be at least). And any other observations and suggestions you might have for me.

I value good customer service/support, a 'techie' / enthusiast attitude, and of course speed, low and consistent latency, no (avoidable) bottlenecks especially to USA destinations.

I've had FTTC with Aquiss before and I like Martin. But this time AAISP is not worlds more expensive than others I'm considering (even with high transfer usage) so I'm kind of leaning in that direction. One bonus for iDNet is currently they are offering 1 month contract whereas others are 12 months at least. Then a plus for Cerberus is they are the only ones who even offer upload in excess of 115 (they have 900/200 but at staggering setup and monthly cost, by comparison at least).

Openreach wholesale cost for upload over 115Mbps is another topic I guess...

Thank you!

Virtually no one, other than Cerberus, offers (or buys) the 220 Mbps upload variant. It would be in the low tenths of percentage of all FTTP connections. It’s actually cheaper (or was) to buy 2 lots of 1000/115 and bond them.

On the choice of ISP, based on your preferences it sounds like A&A will suit you. I found Cerberus quite good to deal with when I was with them.

Nothing has changed in that regard

/me happy with Cerberus, having stuck with them from FTTPoD. They use BTW for backhaul as far as I know.

I'm on 300/50 which is the sweet spot in their price list (£48). Aquiss are almost the same price (£49). However, last time I looked, Aquiss had no setup fee and were offering half price for the first four months of service - meaning that for a new user, it would take over 12 years before Cerberus is cheaper overall smile

I think you're unlikely to be dissatisfied with any of the options you've listed.

Thanks for the responses so far!

How important do you think the backhaul provider is? I asked a few directly for my specific location: iDNet said Zen and AAISP said Openreach (perhaps meant to say BT Wholesale?).

iDNet - Zen
Cerberus - BTW (if candlerb is correct)
Aquiss - Entanet, now owned by City Fibre
Trunk Networks - ?
AAISP - 'Openreach'

Is it a combination of the quality of the backhaul provider and also the service level, or capacity, that the ISP buys from them? In other words, should I even care who it is?

Having clocked up 4 out of your list on FTTP I can give a summary of my experiences:

Trunk Networks same ISP as NoOne Internet (note that they do use Zen backhaul as well as Vodafone, so you will need to ask them if wishing to chose one over the other), very helpful when I wanted to join them but they couldn't connect me at the speed package I wanted (capacity issue on Vodafone back haul in my area), so can't comment on the service.

Cerberus, reliable service and responsive support, via BT Wholesale as far as I'm aware, had a few issues at the end of my first year that went on for a number of weeks (affected many of their customers but long since resolved), and their pricing for 1000/100 FTTP was at the time of renewal very steep, so didn't stay with them.

IDNet: On migration had a couple of days of no service so got to try out their support, again responsive, turned out my account wasn't set up correctly and they had to resubmit it, which sorted it out, but it did take a couple of days before someone thought to do that. I got the impression they were having to check with Zen their supplier for backhaul which added to time to sort it. As IDNet had me going over Zen backhaul, there were various small issues, the main annoyance with Zen is you get connected via widely different routes, sometimes latency was doubled because I was going up via Manchester. I could drop PPP and reconnect and eventually get London routing, only for Zen every couple of weeks drop my connection overnight and I'd be back to Manchester. I really did not want to play those sorts of games with FTTP, it felt like a step back in time hoping gateways at PlusNet. I asked but no option for me to change backhaul to get off Zen. Speeds were okay, hardly ever maxed out the package speed, and also slower via Manchester.

Aquiss: Easy migration. Support really responsive. However Aquiss resell CityFibre, this means any technical issues have to go via Aquiss then to CityFibre, or what is left over of Entanet. On joining I immediately had issues with congestion during the working week from 9am with packet loss, high latency and speeds dropping like a stone and I couldn't do much online when that was happening. There were periods things were okay, which coincided with school holidays. After 6 months of me raising issues and Aquiss reporting it to CityFibre and not getting anywhere, I was allowed to leave without penalty early.

AAISP: I'm on BT Wholesale backhaul but they also use Talk Talk Wholesale. Just wanted to get back to a smaller ISP where you could speak to people that had direct access to getting fixes in place if required, and they had started to offer the faster FTTP packages. Migration all went smoothly. Had a few things I needed to check with them on going live and it was all sorted within minutes. Speedtests are the best and most consistent I've ever had from any ISP showing no sign of congestion, and using the connection day to day everything zips along. AAISP also pick up on issues and get fixes in place within days or hours it seems.

As for backhaul I would avoid Zen, they don't seem to think that dropping connections every few weeks is a problem. I never had more than 30 days of up time with IDNet before the connection dropped overnight, Cerberus prior to IDNet I got to a hundred days or so before I needed to reboot the router for new firmware and reset the counter. Also Zen seem to be in a constant state of change, moving from one new network to another, as soon as everyone is migrated onto their 'new' network, they seem to decide it isn't good enough and they start again.

Hope that helps.
