Anyone on Hey!Broadband know why it keeps going down?

[link to this post]

Often it's only for a few minutes, but overnight it was down for over an hour.

Their status page acknowledges all the incidents, but doesn't give any information on why this keeps happening.

Not a very happy customer as one of the main reasons I wanting full fibre was for stability!

I've noticed other providers having several hour outages overnight, mine recently did and it was clearly a planned outage (they knew but didn't tell their customers) as things on their backhaul had changed when it came back so I wouldn't worry if they are doing work to improve things.

The last time they did planned overnight maintenance I received an email telling about it, and also confirming when it was finished successfully. This was following another outage, and supposed to stop the outages.

All the outages are shown here: https://status.heybroadband.co.uk/#/incident_history

Is BT FTTP or even Cityfibre at least better than this? Both will be options soon hopefully.

Its hard to say as the vast majority of people in the UK don't have BQM's running so they wouldn't be aware of overnight outages. For me I would be more worried if they were happening during the day but appreciate some have other stuff running overnight like backups

Edit: Maybe I'm changing my mind after seeing the same components in the same locations down multiple times on your supplied link.

Ironically it went down again, for just over an hour. Luckily my wife is in the office today rather than WFH, otherwise I'd have got an earful!

I've learnt a few things about being with HB over the past 18 months. Unless something has changed very recently, they only have 1 peering agreement. They've also been victim to cut cables and damage to their kit as they share Openreach's poles and ducts with other providers.

Maybe this is par for course for AltNets?

Yeah, I'm also very wary of that one peer. Also only 2048 IPs. I also have a "static public IP", and indeed it works like one, but the first hop past my router is 172.16.16.16 which is odd.

Cityfibre are actively rolling out here, so they might have been the "third party" that HB are blaming for the recent outages, however they tthen had a planned outage overnight to update their "network server", whatever that is.

Given that Cityfibre have 356,608 IPs, and 156 peers, looks like I'll be jumping ship to a Cityfibre with Zen (my old ISP) as soon as my contract is up. (unless things improve dramatically)

If you're going with Zen on Cityfibre, do either the number of IPs or peers that Cityfibre have make any difference at all? I don't think you should see their network.

I would need to use their network before being routed to Zen's network, unless Zen host their own equipment alongside Cityfibre, but I think that's unlikely.

Similar to how many ISPs use Openreach backhaul on FTTC/P.

If CF only had one peer, and they had a problem, then my connection would go down.

In addition, the more peers, the more routes, so optimal routing resulting in lower latency.

You're confusing IP peering arrangements with wholesale interconnects that might happen at layer 2.
