Giganet router phones home

[link to this post]

Using the router provided by Giganet after our FTTP went live this week (500/70).

One of the first things I did was to rename the default SSID details to something of my choice.

Imagine then my surprise when afterwards I logged in to my Giganet account and reviewing the dashboard section titled Router Details, it shows me the newly set SSID (well one of them only as I split the 2.4/5GHz bands to have unique SSIDs) and it seems allows me to set them remotely from there as well?

I don't mind an ISP being able to get access when I approve it or in the context of troubleshooting a reported issue. But having a remote backdoor into the router that allows my SSID to be read and/or changed? Makes me wonder how secure that is and who else could potentially exploit that.

Sounds as if Giganet are branding/managing a router that is cloud managed. A lot of modern consumer routers are using cloud hosted websites to manage routers, including Cisco. D-Link, Netgear, and the likes of Google's WiFi and Amazon Eero.

They will be running a TR069 server to provision their devices and deploy firmware, aid with support etc. I'm sure if you asked them they could remove it from their platform.
