Just had the new fibre line put in via fibre heros in Shrewsbury, first came an engineer with a cherry picker van who ran an overhead cable from the Openreach pole to the house which didn't take long at all since it's overhead vs underground in my case, then a while later another engineer came to drill a hole through the wall and affix a grey fibre box and cable entry cover to the outside and ONT (Nokia XS-010G-Q) and small round internal cable entry cover to the internal wall. The engineer was flexible to where I wanted the ONT and cable entry point. The ONT flashed for about half an hour after he left before connecting via WAN and then did a reboot which I suspect was an automatic firmware update, but I can't be sure.

I'm now awaiting the Squirrel router to arrive in the next two days and using my Sky FTTC service for the time being. I'm getting the 600mbps up and down service with digital phone line, the phone connects to the router and not the ONT. I can only get 30mbps down and 5mbps up with FTTC due to line length to the cabinet hence the move to FTTP.

I messaged Squirrel via their web chat who quickly confirmed it's the XGS-PON standard and they don't use CGNAT for IP addresses, often it's two people called Dan and Harrison who'll reply. I asked them about using my own router and they said to set the WAN to DHCP/automatic and no credentials were required.

All in all it's going smoothly and I'm quite looking forward to getting fully going. Squirrel handled all the switching from Sky FTTC and I get to keep my landline number.

Great. All sounds good then. You're in a similar situation to me it seems. I'm in Malvern and my install (also with Fibre Heroes) will be to replace my BT line. I'd already moved to FTTP with them though so will be having an additional internal and external box to replace the Openreach connection! I've opted for the 600mbps line and phone too which will be roughly half the cost of my current 500mbps BT contract. I won't be cancelling the BT service until all is working OK and was wondering if I could use the BT Hub once the new line is in whilst waiting for the Squirrel router to arrive. Might be better to be patient though and I guess Squirrel don't activate the line until you confirm their router is in and powered up?

From what I can tell the WAN connection is up and running now as the light went from flashing to solid so I assume there's service on it, Squirrel told me they don't require login credentials when using a third party router. But I've not tried using it myself. As to using the BT router it depends on how locked down it is but before all in one VDSL router/modems were a thing everyone used to connect to FTTC via openreach modems so I assume it's similar.

I may have a go then just to see if it's possible. Won't bother trying too hard though as the BT router will need to be returned after the contract is cancelled anyway.

I also live in Shrewsbury (Harlescott) I signed up on Thursday and the engineer is coming Monday (i Hope).

How are you getting on with Squirrel, I hadnt heard of them before so im a little apprehensive.
