Performance Issues

[link to this post]

Hi, I'm a relative newbe with regard to DS technical issues. But I've been a user for over 5 years with no real problems and have experience with multiple ISP's.

I seem to be having problems with my connection speed.

here is my setup.

Connected to PlusNet ISP through standard BT connect for ADSL.
My line connection is a 1mb line.
BT tell me my line should be able to support 2mb
I haven't been ADSL Max'ed yet and ny exchange is not yet LLU enabled for Plusnet
I have requested to be Maxed but no luck with gettng this done yet by Plusnet. I have also asked them why I'm cant connect at 2mb.

My hardware is a Linksys WAG54GS rom V1.00.02.

I have number of laptops and desktop computers. The connection problem exists on all systems, even when only 1 PC or laptop is active.

So to the problem....

My connection speed varies dramatically and happens regularly over the past 3 months, but appears to be getting worse

An example from this evening, based on the plusnet line speed checker.

Over a period of 5 mins my line speed variers from 141kbs to 890kbs. This is typical of what happens at all times of the day/night. Web pages freeze when accessing then work fine.

So my question is how can I get this issue investigated or fixed.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

thanks

david

There are some fault finding guides:
http://portal.plus.net/support/broadband/help_and_setup/intermittent_faults.shtml?link=suptop5_bb4
http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/troubleshooting.htm
http://usertools.plus.net/tutorials/id/10

It will be easier to advise if some of the basic checks have been done.
Some of the things to try:
- try another speedtester (I've never got reliable results from the PN one)
- check with the router connected directly at the master socket
- monitor the SNR margin to see whether it is low and/or variable
