I too am told that this might not be a good idea. Best would be to cease the line and then contact PN with your new telephone number and connect. You might have a slightly longer delay in activation but it is far more preferable than being in limbo with BT and PN if it goes wrong. You are no worse off and you still pay the same amount for activation to PN and I would recommend this from what I have read in the past and not only from PN but another ISP's rep.

It sounds like an SPO is best avoided. On that basis, if I cease my account with PN with the intention of starting a new one at the new address, what happens to my PN account? Does my account stay active so I can get at the mailboxes via dialup during the limbo period? What happens to my PN webspace?

I would be lying if I said I knew the answers but check with PN, I am sure they can sort those issues out.

You can do a house move with Plusnet (not SPO with PN and BT). Last time I did this (about 2 years ago) the new line was activated and when that went live the old one was ceased. I believe you can give PN the date to cease the new line and also the date you would like the new line activated.
One thing to remember with the cease and reprovide route is that if you are moving the number to the new house then it can add upto a week to the process as the old house needs to be ceased before PN can order the reprovide at the new one. For limited downtime it is best to get a new number at the new house.
