very very slow - mostly

[link to this post]

Im on plusnet premier optinos 1.
Up until 8/9/6 pretty good on the whole, quick and wholesome internet fun.
(weird problem for a couple of weeks where bang on 0002 (end of peak time???), sync would vanish and I would have to reboot my router - plusnet denied all knowledge).

I can connect to my exchange and speed tests come out around 6Mbs.
Traffic to plusnet is also as quick.

Almost everywhere else is pants.
dns resolves ok, and quickly, but pages time out all the time.
17k downloads.

had a call open for 10days and given up.

opened a new one with exactly the same problem.

Highly amused at the broadband checker telling me to switch off hardware and software firewalls. Perhaps I should dig into my virus vault and infect myself to save time....

any ideas?

Any chance of getting a friend to bring their laptop over to your place and try the same connection?

what happens when you do a tracert to the sites which don't open?

If you are running windows XP, click start button and then Run

Enter CMD and press enter

In the black box, type "tracert <insert web address here>" and press return. e.g. tracert www.plus.net.

Copy and paste the results to here.

Rgrds

Lix

plusnet ADSL Business Broadband Premier upto 8Mb

The router most likely responsible for your slow downloads in owned by plus.com.

i'll give you a complete recursive trace to anywhere you like, you can specify the packet size and ttl if you like.

tracert going out look ok, which would explain fast resolution, fast caonnection.
After that it all goes pear shaped, once connected its pants.

Rather oddly, it seems to be ok at the moment, plusnet are running the automated tests. (the check back here in 2 hours)

Could be the Ellacoyas going a bit mad. Maybe they've been upgrading them recently or they've put you on the wrong account shaping?

Failing that, it could be an exchange (contention?) problem.

Its not the exchange - consistently get 6meg even in peak times.

Ive asked lots and lots of times if I'm subject to traffic shaping.
they always say no. as i said in another reply, dns is fine resolution and connection is quick.
after that very slow....

resolution and traceroutes from me to other hosts is fast.
resolution and traceroutes from other hosts to me is slow.

Do you know if you're on Tiscali LLU or BTw MaxDSL?

I read in another thread that Tiscali LLU have been problematic recently.

I should be on BT MaxDSL.

I used to be with Tiscali, and it was amazingly abysmal Im scared to death of any ISP im with bunging me on to Tiscali lines.

Tiscali always said to me that my line was not capable of anything more than 512k.
Plusnet gave me maxadsl, until recently there hasnt been any real problems (ignoring the lost emails we dont talk about).

In fact, until a couple of weeks ago, Ive been more than happy.
