Throttling

[link to this post]

I moved from PN a few weeks ago.
Internet speeds, and conection were always fine.
But with P2P it was a joke.
I was getting 1 to 2 KB/s I thought it was going fast if i hit 5 KB/s.

Since I have moved never had any torrent that slow.
Currect one is going at 120 KB/s.

Have others found PN to be throttling?

It was one of the reasons that I left. I used to like to download scans of old comics that I owned (sometimes, it's just too much effort to get them off the shelves) and the downloads crawled along, no matter the time of day. I remember one in particular taking nearly 4 days, night and day to finish and that was with plenty of seeds.

I know that some find that downloading after midnight made it run at acceptable speeds but it didn't seem to do much for me. I changed ISP and the problems disappeared completely.

PlusNets traffic management systems are what is causing the slowdowns, together with the increasing amount of encrypted P2P which has to share the bandwidth with HTTP etc thus leaving less bandwidth for the lower classed P2P/FTP/Binary usenet connections.

PN are testing some new Ellocoya software which may help distribute the P2P traffic better which should improve the overall speed.

The bandwidth usage graphs here show the impact P2P is having on the network. The orange band is detected P2P and the encrypted P2P makes up the majority of the pink (other) grouping. Together they ad dup to over half the bandwidth usage. As a resulr PN have to limit that type of traffic so normal web/email activities are not affected. If they did not, all your traffic, including web access, would be a a crawl.

P2P does slow down during the day but does increase to an acceptable level overnight. That is how the traffic management is designed to work.

I suffered the same p2p speed issues which is why i migrated away to UKFSN. no such problem now.

Extremely heavily and what made it worse was their denial about it.

PN are a complete laughing stock. The sooner the inevitable happens, the better, IMHO.

Please don't take what I write in the wrong way but your post is not answering the question being asked. It will, however, cause another fight between 'them' and 'us' types. Just my 2p. If you have an experience of the throttling then by all means write it here and I mean no offence to you, nor trying to moderate the forum.

Yes i find that during peak time good torrent high seeds low leeches are running v poor.

Kick them off at midnight and all is finished by the morning so After midnight - off peak seems to be the way forward. All other times connection for p2p is throttled

BT are doing much the same except they still do manage to offer everyone 30KB/sec and they aren't measuring their customer base in thousands like PN is.

would agree. when i used p2p on +net, i left it on overnight as literally no point turning it on at any other time of day as speeds dropped to pratically zero (literally).
