Speed spikes?

[link to this post]

Hi,
Over the past week I have noticed speed spikes on my line.

During usenet downloads running at a constant 800 KB/s (netmeter reading) I get a spike in speed. Netmeter has recorded this at 11 MB/s download and 320 KB/s upload. On the graph it looks quite spectacular.

The only worry I have is that I have an old DG834 router which is not rated for such speeds (I think). Can these high speeds damage my router/computer?

Cheers

R

Just a thought.. do you have a local network.. and could it have been some be traffic running over your LAN
In which case the netgear should be able to handle up to 100Mbps since it has a 10/100 switch.

No I do not have a Lan network, just a single desktop connected directly to the router.

.. that is still a LAN network. You will still be able to send/recieve up to 100mbit to your router.

Probably just some arp or upnp broadcast from the netgear.
