Best date to ask for a MAC?

[link to this post]

After a near two years of being with Plusnet I have come to a decision to migrate away.

The reasons being that they have slipped in service and commitment since April, moving me to LLU back in May without giving me an option to Opt-Out, 2 days downtime of the LLU service when transferred from the BTw network, interleaving on LLU, erratic sync speeds on LLU (never got more than 512kB/s upload when I could potentially have 800kB, and no more than 6Mb down when syncing at 8Mb - using a clean line and exchange 250metres away), major connection issues during August again with LLU, 1hr on hold waiting for CS to answer who in the end is no help at all (this happened at least 3 times), ticket requests for a move back to the BTw network being ignored or receiving rubbish responses. Plusnet not able to tell if the line has been transferred back onto the BT network or is still on LLU.

Having had my connection moved back to BTw for free by Plusnet a month ago I haven't had any major issues since apart from still getting an occasional disconnect although for the price of

I would go for the day before.

Best of luck.

I requested mine on the day of billing. Had my code within 2 hours but am keeping hold of it for a few more days. No point in paying for a month's worth of connection then signing up to another ISP to pay for that same time again IMO. I will hand over my MAC to the new ISP on the 1st November which should give plenty of time for any problems to be sorted as my notice period expires on the 14th.

I think if I were in your position, I would ask for a MAC on Wed 1st November. Remember you have to give 30 days' notice (assuming you're on a monthly contract), and your request for a MAC starts the clock. So you will be billed on 3rd Nov as usual, and that should be your final payment, assuming your migration completes by 30Nov.

If you have any deferred fees (activation or h/ware), then they will want to collect payment for these by CC before they issue a MAC. So to save time, give them authority to do this when you complete your MAC application - the final stage of the Help & Support procedure involves filling in a "Question" saying why you want a MAC ... silly question, I know, but it gives you an opportunity to tell them that they can collect whatever money is owing etc.

If you have the time and patience, have a look at the "Email access terminated" thread over on PUG.

Thanks for the link on the account downgrade.

I'm just wondering if I don't take the email option with BE would I still be able to access the Plusnet account through Outlook POP3 due to pop/smtp ports not being enabled, i'll probably ask this question in the BE forums.

Yes you should. You'll certainly be able to use POP3 to receive messages from your PN account, but you'll probably have to change the SMTP server to a Be-specific one eg smtp1.bethere.co.uk if you want to send as well. Check out the Be forum here to make sure. The thread Do Be allow ISP-independent e-mail addresses? seems to suggest that you can.

My friend (the subject of the PUG thread) can use his PN account fully (send/receive) with TalkTalk, so I'd be very surprised if you can't do it with Be. Of course, if you've just read that thread, you may well wonder if it's worth "keeping in touch" with your PN email account. You'd certainly be foolish to rely on it!

From a post by Bob Pullen, PlusNet Customer Support at http://usergroup.plus.net/forum/index.php/topic,3277.0.html:

Assuming a monthly contract the following applies...

If you were to request cancellation today we would close the account and schedule a cease in exactly 30 days time. On the date you request cancellation we would also take a pro-rata amount that covers anything past your next billing date up to day 30 of your notice. Any deferred hardware and activation fees are taken at the same time.

In the case of an outbound migration we now downgrade your account as soon as we receive notification that the service has been transferred by BT. No further payments are taken at this point.
