Very Poor Speed Since Max

[link to this post]

My Max upgrade was done a couple of weeks ago, and for the entire 10 days at first my Stable Rate stayed at 2000.

After my 10 days I contacted Plusnet and said I wasn't happy as my router said I had a near perfect line, so they manually increased it to 8000.

Ever since I am lucky to get 1Mb from my connection. On one rare occasion I got 3.5 during the day when I had a day off, but it is almost always arouond the 1Mb or even less level.

My router stats tonight are:

Downstream Rate: 7616 Kbps
Upstream Rate: 448 Kbps
Downstream Margin: 9 db
Upstream Margin: 23 db
Downstream Line Attenuation: 31
Upstream Line Attenuation: 18

These are pretty similar to what they were when it was 2000.

When I was on plain old 2Mb I had a perfect connection, and couldn't fault it, but right now it's worse than useless.

I have contacted Plusnet again and said they either do something about it or I will move.

I guess the won't care.

Has anyone else got this problem?

Is your exchange on RED. 50% in the country are at the moment. I know mine is.

I get the following:

Virtual paths: Red

BT is reporting that some of the virtual paths at this exchange are not operating within BT Wholesale's planning guidance, although they are still operating within the product specification.

At busy times, your ADSL connection may operate at a reduced speed, although not all customers on your exchange may be affected. You should only contact support if there is no current ETA date set.

The ETA fix time is: 03 Nov 06

So what does this actually mean, and why did my 2Mb product operate perfect until they upgraded to 8Mb?

My exchange is red too but I am still getting 600-700 kB/s on FTP and Usenet. I am not with PN. Therefore having a red exchange is not always the cause since an exchange can go to red due to some limited problems. The best way to diagnose speed issues and whether it is related to your exchange is to test various protocols i.e. if you get high speed on http downloads but low on usenet or FTP then it is likely to be an ISP issue and not the exchange.

In the case of the OP the best way to diagnose his problems would be to do a test here:
http://test.speedtester.bt.com:50301/

It doesn't always work so he will have to try it a few times but it could be a stuck bRAS profile.

My exchange has been red since 25th September (with an ETA of fix for today !!!)

I assume, Green is the ideal colour

I've got exactly the same problem - had the 2MB service and it worked perfectly - nearly always downloaded at max speed. Got an email saying I had been 'upgraded' to up to 8MB two weeks ago and ever since then I've been unable to download at anything above 1MB, usually less.

I have sent a ticket/question/whatever you call it and am waiting to hear back.

Just had the following reply from PlusNet. Although the Stable Rate page still says 8000.

"The report from BT that advises on the through put supplied to you is set to 2mb at present. With regards to speed changes report from BT can de-crease on a daily basis howerver increase only take place every 3 days. If you always sync at a higher speed you need to re-start the router a few times a day for 3 days and the speed should increase."
