I may have done a 2+2=5 but I was guessing that a dropped connection could be the cause of a timeout. The LAN link from the PC to the router would still be OK so it wouldn't show up as a lost connection on the PC.

iirc part of the problem (perhaps not this problem) with remote desktop settings is to have the host and the remote PCs both at the same resolution, which reduces a fair bit of the sluggishness. Any setup I've used, 16-bit was fine, as long as both ends of the connection were set identically. Also disable or reduce any high-end gfx settings.
His router shows regular disconnects/reconnects, like 10-12 times from 5PM-midnight -----
Idle time-outs? Or... some iterations of Netgear firmware introduced this pattern of behaviour - check their website for the latest firmware, or try downgrading to an earlier version.
