PAYG to BBYW Option 2

I am a longstanding member on PAYG.

I have a static IP at the moment. If I change to BBYW 2 I will get a dynamic IP by default.
What would this mean to me and would there be any merit in opting for a static IP.

When I switched I stayed with the same fixed IP address and I do not remember having to do anything special for that.

As has been said before on these forums, if you don't know the difference then you don't need a static IP .

Basically a static IP is only of use if you run some kind of server on your computer and want people, (possibly yourself at work), able to access your home computer from elsewhere on the net. (Not a home network, that works OK with a dynamic IP as that IP is the external address of your router. As your address is always the same that sort of thing is much easier to organise.

Otherwise a dynamic IP is fine. In fact many people prefer one - especially if they go on forums where they might get banned.

For many situations using a service like dyndns is fine for letting people find any server you want to run, e.g. a slingbox

Agreed, but I was pitching my answer at the level of the question. DynDNS would only be relevant if the OP says he does have a server and so on, in which case he would surely have not needed to ask the question.

To David, The splurge on BBYW 2 says that by default you get a dynamic IP.

If you raise the request to upgrade a ticket is placed on your account. If you then access that ticket through the members centre you can place a comment on there requesting that you keep the static IP address, we'll leave it on your account when the change is made.
