Does PN have a disconnect policy for heavy users?

[link to this post]

I am aware of the traffic management policies, and am just curious about whether this is the only extent to how the service is managed?

For instance, if I was a big torrent user (for legal material, a release distribution seed for example) that went for Plusnet BBYW Option 1 and the Max 832kbps upstream upgrade and hammered the unlimited overnight usage every night, could they get hissy and terminate service without warning?

Or - the reverse - hammering downstream during overnight free usage.

Nope.

Definitely not without warning either. I can't recall a single instance of a residential customer being cut off. We do restrict speeds once the usage allowance has been passed, if they're not using PAYG usage, but we'd never just cut someone off.

So - if the 'hammering' was done during the overnight usage which is unmetered, that would be OK?

Also - is upload traffic counted towards allowances - and if so, are there any plans to make it unlimited (I notice IDnet are offering unlimited uploads on all their packages). Surely the upstream flow on the network is very small compared to the download and since the capacity is there anyway, allow it to be unmetered?

Hiya,

I can't see any issues with you hammering off peak, it's why the off peak period is there in the first place.

Upload is included within the usage allowance and we've no plans to change this. The reason being is that Upload traffic is factored into our forecasting and thus pricing, so if we were to allow unlimited uploads, we'd have to get the revenue generated from that from somewhere else.

Just a point which Entanet found to their cost, even with a large off-peak allowance rather than unlimited. The result was that the first couple of hours of the "so-called" off-peak became the time of day when the load is heaviest so speeds suffer badly. Weekends are off-peak in name but definitely not in reality.

So if many did the same as you propose and hammered the off-peak unlimited, then the service would become unreliable.

Hmm. Not convinced.

Our off peak is from Midnight until 8am, so the chances of large numbers of people hammering it then are unlikely and it's also less likely to be used for gold/titanium traffic.

Their's is 22:00-8:00 and it gets hammered 22:00 to a bit after midnight. They have the ALT kicks in of course at those times.

i suspect that the problem is the 22.00 start when people are still on the computer - many more will have gone to bed by midnight

I believe most do it by setting it on a schedule to start automatically.

Anyway, all I was doing with my post wasn't to make waves here, it was just a friendly warning as to what can happen .

Correct but the point I was making is that at 22.00 a lot of normal users are still on line
