My strange exchange !!!!!!

[link to this post]

Hi All

Though I have not been happy about the appaling loss of my good connection back in March 08 I had resigned myself to what I had though at intervals I 'talk' to Ian Wild about the matter.

I have been chugging along on margin 14.3db , Sync 2304 for something 338 hours but I noticed at about 23.03 hrs i.e. about 35 mins ago my margin leapt to 17.1 (currently dropped a little to 16.8 and my sync plummeted to 1792. The WAN has been up all that time.

Any thoughts as to what can cause such a sudden increase in margin???

TIA

Morning,

Did you connection physically drop at that time?

Does a reboot return the speeds to its previous level?

Hi James

No, the connection (& WAN) has been solid for over 350 hours now.

Interestingly there were two dipping spikes at about 8.40am and 10.35am this morning to approx 12db and it has currently "returned" to 15.3db

I have yet to try a reboot and will do that this evening.

Thanks - Did the sync speed drop on both occasions or is it a change in noise margin only?

The two dipping spikes I mentioned were brief and the sync speed was rock steady i.e. no change seen.

I look forward to your observations.

I suspect in which case that there was a noise fluctuation on your line that caused enough interference to alter your signal to noise ratio. Does anything happen in the house at around 11pm? (e.g. heating/boiler switching on/off).

Hi Bob

There has never been a regular episodic event that shows in the graphs, what I have described are unusual and spurious and IMO are external to the house.

For the record the margin has steadily increased over the past few hours from approx 15 to 16.1 with the sync remaining at 1792

I have yet to try what James suggested of a complete disconnect and reboot of the router.

That's a good thing!

If the sync rate is staying the same, but the noise margin is increasing is means that the signal:noise ratio is improving. Theoretically, that should mean that if you reboot your router at that point in time, you should receive a slightly better sync speed.

And read the stats immediately after - we haven't seen an indication of the target noise margin yet.

Nope & I haven't referred to a target noise margin.
