Using Telnet on TG585v7

Hi, I am trying to change the DNS to OpenDNS on the router. When I try to access the router using telnet command it asks for password but no success. I tried 'Adminstrator' as username and empty password field and I still can't log in. The router was supplied by plusnet, so if you guys know the default username and password then please let me know. Secondly, to keep things short from asking again, how do I change the DNS to OpenDNS? At the moment I am looking at 585v6 manual to change it and Im not sure if that is any good.

Having said that, is there any reason why you're not changing the DNS settings in your Network Connection properties instead?

Very good point! Thanks for reminding me. Usually changing the DNS on router means any new device added will be automatically configured with OpenDNS setting

Normally the router would asign itself as the DNS servers to any LAN or WLAN clients, via DHCP. It forwards any requests it gets to the servers that have been assigned by the ISP on the WAN interface. (Sometimes this causes annoying messages on the client.)

I am understanding that you want to modify the DHCP manager settings on the router to hand out specific primary and secondary DNS servers to the client. I would have thought that this was easier done from the web management interface rather than telnet.

BTW if you alter just one of the primary or secondary, from the default value, I suspect that you might also have to alter the other. Otherwise the client will end up with only one DNS server assigned.

You can't - only telnet works

You can actually specify DNS servers in the web interface - you need to navigate to Home Network>Interfaces>Local Network and edit the DHCP pool (or create a new one).

The only problem with the Thomson is that it will still hand out its own IP address as the primary DNS server in addition to any that you specify (which will be secondary and tertiary). The Thomson will also still proxy PNs DNS servers on its own IP so in effect nothing will have changed.

You have to force it to use the specified DNS servers, which requires you to telnet to the router and use the CLI to force DNS forwarding off.

If you look in the CLI manual the command you need is "dns server config state = disabled"

(Make sure that you have correctly entered the DNS servers in the web interface before telnetting in by doing an ipconfig/all at the command prompt on the PC - you should see three DNS servers - the router and two OpenDNS).

Just one question Is "dns server config state = disabled" permanently saved? Or will it be lost after a cold start/reboot?
