Heh ho, my speed again - question?

[link to this post]

Hi All

It been a while since I mentioned my connection but thought I would post the BT PT results for a bit of feedback.

Sync 2176 down 448 up
IP Profile for the line 1750
Actual IP throughput for the test 771

Now its that last figure that has me puzzled it seems so damned low but is it really???

For the record the WAN has been up at that sync for over 628 hours and counting.

Any feedback welcome.

TIA smile

Why not do a speedtest or 2 to confirm it?

Fair comment, I have just done the BT test again

Your DSL connection rate: 2176 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 1750 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 1373 kbps

So the Actual IP throughput is now 'much' greater but that is IMO a heck of variance between last night and this morning, isn't it???

I will do the test again a couple more times spread overthe day and see how much variation there can be?

I meant do an independent speedtest like the one here at TBB or speedtest.net (regularly).

Try Plusnet's speedtester http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/
It always gives the highest results.

Running this speedtester gives me 1676 and is just an annoying reminder that I used to have nigh on double that speed in up to early march 2008.....agh!

PlusNet to their credit sadly never managed to get BT to give an honest answer as what happened to my line at that time! They just kept insisting that it was within parameters for the MaxDSL service ~ oh yeah?

What's your attenuation and noise margin? The speed test results look normal for your sync speed.

Hi Jelv

The attenuation is 56db
Margin 14.2 (currently)

For the record I used to 'enjoy' a Margin as low as 6db with sync of over 3100 (occassionally it maxed out at 3500. This was for a very very long from when my MaxDSL service started but in March 08 as remarked about it, it all took a turn for the worse......long story was very p***ed off but now resigned to the fact that until we move house I have got I have got.

The greatest annoynace (still) is that not only would no one "honestly" explain why my service was so good for ages and then so poor by comparison "they" BT would not own up and just fell back to their SLA that the speed I am getting is within the MaxDSL parameters.

Hi

quote The attenuation is 56db Margin 14.2 (currently)

With an attenuation of 56db you would expect to Synch at 3424Kbps on a normal line . That is with the default 6dB SNR target. Your current SNR margin indicates that you have a 15db Target SNR . Something must have caused this increase in Target .Each 3db increase in Target
SNR can cost you between 400 and 800Kbps in synch speed depending on bit loading( the higher the initial connection rate the greater the loss) . So it it is NOT surprising your Synch speed is 2176Kbps . A loss of about 1200Kbps . (3* 400Kbps).
So your first problem is to try and persuade your ISP to lower your Target SNR . To do this you will need to show that your line is stable . A good tool to monitor your line is Routerstats if your Router is compatible . This application takes the data from your router and puts in into a real time graphical form see this link
http://vwlowen.co.uk/internet/files.htm

It would also be usefull to see you full stats including UPTIME and the errors CRCs,LOS,LOF,ES, etc.

This link may help with getting stats and information on SNR etc.

Hi Jeff

Thanks for the insight. Yes, as mentioned I used to have margin of 6db (actually if I recall it was more like 5db).

PlusNet to their credit did try their best with with BT even had an engineer out and he (again relying on memory) reported my line as capable of getting 4000kbps. But even with the CSC guys talking to & pulling any strings they could access BT would neither own up or do anything to make things return to the 'good old days' or fess up as to what had happend to my line.

After this extra while having gone by I wonder if James or someone else in CSC @ PlusNet can take another look.

Oh, yes I use Routerstats and have in the past provided the graphs to PlusNet CSC..........oh the frustration ~ agh!!!
