Ethernet port on a Plasma TV ???

Hi All

Now we are looking at replacing our elderly and failing Hitachi TV with a Panasonic Plasma unit ~ HD feed when we can afford Sky so ww would be trying FreeSat.

Now this TV has an Ethernet connection but I have downloaded the manual and it is rather vague as to the usage of the Ethernet port and "talks" about its use with the FreeSat 'network'. FreeSat mention that they are trialling a beta for the BBC iPlayer so I can see that point ~ assuming my slightly troublesome under 2Mb speed is uop to the job??

But my main question is - has anyone used that port to stream photos and video from a PC to the TV??? In principle I surmise it should work but does it and is there an SOP to get it right first time???

For example I have JPEGs and AVI video files from my Sony DV camcorder on my NAS drive ~ can these be easily accessed to view on the TV? For the record I would likely need to use a HomePlug link as no LAN wired up in the house.

Any thoughts & feedback woudl be very welcome.

I would try and find a manufacturer specific forum for the make of tv you are buying as this will have nothig to do with your isp if connected via your local network.

how far away is your tv from the main PC ? because for viewing your files on the tv the easiest was would be a hdmi/vga cable depending on distance and personal preferance + video card in pc

for example - i have a 32" HDTV that is like maybe 5 metres away from my PC and sometimes i like to game on the tv so have a 15 metre vga cable running around the skirting boards of my living room straight to tv, i can then view videos, pics or watever i like on the tv and if you got a add in video card with 2 either vga or dvi ports you can use both monitor and tv at same time.

as for ethernet inside a tv i can understand that as we advance in broadband speeds then we will soon be able to get full HD streams or even blu-ray streams and the tv will be able to access the internet for software or firmware updates.

I have a Panasonic FreeSat TV which also has an ethernet socket. I've connected it to my home network and although it aquires an IP address there's absolutely nothing you can do with it!

It's, as you say, there for potential use with the FreeSat platform.

Similarly, the ethernet port on my Sky+HD box currently serves no purpose!

If the port had an application now, I suspect it would be advertised, e.g. there are TV's that are capable of playing media from a network device, they are usually labelled as DNLA compliant

Just bought a Panasonic Plasma 42'' TX-P42G10. Marks and Sparks special deal £628 fitted, including Quidco, (5 year guarantee.)

The Ethernet port will eventually let me obtain BBC iplayer on Freesat I believe...basically not much use at all.

The TX-P42G15 is the same plasma but you can surf to a ring fenced area that Panasonic have allocated, Youtube, Picasa is an example...check the Panasonic site I suggest.It will not stream as you may want as I understand it.

I will be interested when it is more available and cheaper in the LG 390 Blu Ray player.
Has a USB port, connect to a portable hard drive and it will play most file types plus it has wireless Ethernet.

Am I missing something but what has this thread got to do with PlusNet?
